Considering today's market, is a Ps4 Pro a better buy for gaming than a pc?

I don't know about Canada, but the sales are very aggressive in the US. Newegg sends me 40% off codes once a week but I don't use them often because Best Buy and Gamestop often put some of the top games at 50% off MSRP, and sometimes you can luck out and get games super cheap at Target. The competition among the brick and mortars for PS4 game sales is pretty strong in the US. The Playstation Store is usually pretty lousy for new AAA games but occasionally will have really killer deals, usually in their big Christmas, Black Friday, Midyear, and Golden Week sales.

Yeah it was super cheap. You can still find it in stores for $30 USD every once in a while. I only paid $60 because I planned to play it right away (I bought it in the summer). And then of course I didn't end up playing it until the day before Thanksgiving because I was just starting NieR Automata at the time and ended up getting sidetracked into playing most of the Drakengard + Nier series after how much I loved Automata. So I paid $60 when I could have had it for $30 on the day I started playing. Oh well, I don't mind spending the $60 since P5 is one of the greatest games I have ever played and I love Atlus.

I actually bought my PS4 Pro on Black Friday weekend purely for Persona 5, I mean, I'll use it for other Japanese exclusives, but Persona 5 was the first title.  And that's also kinda part of the appeal there you can argue about specs and refresh rates, there's a lot of Japanese games, which I like, which are NOT going to see PC ports.  It's my 'Weeb Machine' if you will.

it's iffy. It was a bit more. 1080s were near 1300 usd for a short time and I bought mine at launch for 750 lol. It's all evening out.

Oh yeah Playstation is a must for Japanese games. And I have gotten really into Japanese games lately since they still focus on single player and I stopped playing online shooters after Unreal Tournament 2004.

I was kind of jealous when my brother sniped an MSI Gaming X GTX 1080 Ti off newegg for $840 two or three weeks ago. Not that I would have kept it, as my 970 is still doing great on modern PC games like AC Origins, Prey, Wolfenstein II, etc.

Clocked at 1172 MHz

 

So, The XBOX One and One S have more shaders/CU's (Compute Units) over the 2400G, but it has a much lower clock. This probably balances out fairly equally in the end.

 

But the XBOX One S has almost four times more Compute Units and Shaders - it fucking SMOKES a Ryzen 2400G.

 

So for a comparable price ($600-700), the XBOX One X is a way more powerful beast when it comes to graphics.

If you compare an Xbox One X to a similarly specced PC, you will find that's actually wrong. I mean seriously...talking in absolutes like that is generally a bad idea because you will have situations where that might change.

 

Yeah sure, a PC might be more versatile, but if your purpose is to game, you can't beat an Xbox One X.

New games on PC and consoles are $60 for most AAA games.

On sale, you can find games lower on both.  Consoles have used games too, so you can find games for lower prices too (plus, resell your games once done).

Same way for hardware, both can be found on sale or 2nd hand market.

 

Currently, the way the market is, either an individual waits out for PC hardware to lower in price or buy a console and game (if a Xbox One X/ PS4 Pro, HDR is a nice bonus on games that use it - the Xbox One console line also has added benefit of the ability to play UHD Blu-rays).  Either way, each presents pros and cons and the decision to buy one is up to what an individual wants.

 

Personally myself, I play on PC, Xbox One S (works great as UHD player and media machine), PS4 Pro (HDR is sweet), Switch (portability is super sweet), and a mini SNES.

O my yes, big reason I have my PS4 Pro.  Plus, Kingdom Hearts later!!!!  That game is a big one.  Still though, Persona 5 is dope for a RPG, and Horizon Zero Dawn is one beautiful game (the HDR and rendering is stunting at times - it amazing what the dev team pulled off on the PS4 hardware).

Also, I'd argue that no console (Or PC) is obsolete so long as it plays the games you want to play.  If you haven't played a game, no matter how old it is, it's new to you.

Only if you buy them on release.. They are $60 (USA only I presume) or $90/$100 (that's the price of new titles in Australia). I usually just wait a few weeks or months, and can usually pick them up at half price brand new in some sale or a quarter the brand new price pre-owned from EB Games or JB HiFi.

 

I've had a PS4 since release in 2013, imo it's worth it for the exclusives & then some games are just more orientated to sitting back on a couch or on the bed & playing them, as opposed to sitting at my desk. I do have a Steam Link, but the quality is subpar at best over the network, even though it is smooth game play.

Yeah you can get a PS4 Slim with a game for $230 new. You can't build a PC for that price in that form factor period. Also fortnite is free so there you go

Ugh, as much as I want to play those games, I could never justify putting the money down for a PS4 just for those.

Console games are tailored for the hardware, Xboxs aren't underpowered for anything  . . . still 30fps in games so no problemo

They do become obsolete, but seeing as the 500 series cards launched in 2010 can still be used to play DX12 games, it clearly takes vastly longer for them to become useless. Not that they do so perfectly or at max settings but they can still play them. Good luck getting the latest console games running on your Xbox360

The One runs on DDR3 memory for it's graphics. It's underpowered as hell. I'm surprised devs can get ports to run at 900P30 on it TBH.

It's important to note that the 2400G is based on Vega and not Polaris like the X.

 

Polaris is better at delta compression supposedly, so that makes it easier for higher resolutions.

It doesn't need more power to run games at 30fps. Its not 4k or anything fancy at all. 30fps isn't much to ask for in the first place - remember games are tailored for the console, not the garbage optimization we face today regarding PUBG etc.

GDDR5 became a standard once 1080P resolutions became common. DDR3 is extremely lackluster for graphics memory.

 

IMO spec wise for the price

Xbox One = Garbage

PS4 = really good

PS4 Pro = Garbage

Xbox One X = really good

Oh, I am not arguing about which one is better, I do game on a PC.

 

While PC components do allow you to still play games many years later, a extension of you point would be the comparison of the Xbox 360 not playing Xbox one games to a PC from 2005 (360 launch) playing battlefield 1.
