New Ryzen 3 & 5 with Integrated Vega Graphics

zombienerd

So, AMD is releasing new Zen-based APUs, but not calling them APUs.  They are calling them  “AMD Ryzen Desktop Processor with Radeon Vega Graphics”.

Quote

Though AMD might not use the term APU anymore, that’s what we are looking at today. The Ryzen + Vega processor (single die implementation, to be clear) for desktop solutions will begin shipping February 12 and will bring high-performance integrated graphics to low cost PCs. Fully titled the “AMD Ryzen Desktop Processor with Radeon Vega Graphics”, this new processor will utilize the same AM4 socket and motherboards that have been shipping since March of 2017. Finally, a good use for those display outputs!

There is the Ryzen 3 2200G and the Ryzen 5 2400G.  The new R3-2200G packs a slightly higher 3.5ghz over the 1200, as well as 8 CUs (512 stream processors).  The new R5-2400G has a slightly higher 3.6ghz clock over the 1400, as well as 11CUs (704 stream processors).

What's amazing is that the new R5 2400G equals a Core i5 8400 with a GTX 1030, all for only $169 vs around $300 for the Intel + Nvidia solution..  This will be an AMAZING boon for low end gamers.

Well, they technically aren't APUs. They're CPU+iGPU, and that's it. Whereas true APUs are designed to leverage the iGP beyond conventional iGP tasks, and accelerate the system itself by having the OS offload any basic tasks to the iGP that it has instruction sets for and doesn't benefit from the individually stronger CPU cores.

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Something is wrong with this world.

Why did you come to this world?

These will be great for budget gaming desktops,

Also, laptops with these "APUs" will probably have somewhat decent battery life as well.  Since CPU's with integrated graphics usually drain the battery less then a CPU+GPU.

And since these "APUs" have the graphical horsepower similar to a 1030, these will be great for budget laptops that you can still game on.

I was exactly thinking this. One of those really small silverstone HTPCs, a 300W SFX PSU from Seasonic and 8GB RAM = gaming on the go (wherever there's a monitor or TV).

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Someone can use an i5-8400 with a cheaper graphics card that's cheaper than the 1030. But there's no doubt that the Ryzen 5 2400G is a very good bargain.

I agree but I won't recommend it to someone before reviews are out, as usual.

I can basically sell the GT 1030 and R3 1200 and just swap it for this "APU" instead in my media PC. That would leave a room for another 3.5" HDD which would be excellent.

The interesting thing about the 2 Desktop APUs is that they do not have one for the R7 line which means they could make a high end APU with a MCM design for the R7 product line.

Also we are seeing a 0.4 GHz bump in same model category, 2200G vs 1200 and 2400G vs 1400, I hope this is the bump we see across the board for the 2xxx parts.

Yeah the Whole Ryzen Line up has done Pretty well IMO

But then there GPU sector reminds you they still do a lot of smoke. Vega was pretty bad and they still hyped it.

In there small defense  i didn't think they had the budget to Do great CPUs and great GPUs at the same time / Same year anyhow but its somewhat Sad.

These Chips seem again to be pretty Good and have there own spot in the market place and will be around the head of the pack if not the head in its price to perf.

It appears that the G models are replacing the non-X 4c parts for the Ryzen line up. Kind of a fascinating way to bin the Mobile parts.

The Raven Ridge die (1 CCX + 1 GPU) could make a fascinatingly interesting TR or Epyc die, though I've got zero idea what you'd do with it. IF-based mGPU is already probably a massive headache for AMD right now with Navi, and that's not out for another year at least.

If DDR4 prices ever settle back down, it'll be great, haha.

While I understand why AMD was so late with the APUs, the logic of them really does work well, especially in SFF builds.
