It's not like they have an expiry date... keep it until you need something else / upgrading becomes impractical.  Whether that's 2 years or 10, that's up to you

Well I get a general feeling from this forum that every generation makes the last obsolete  or at least a very vocal minority act that way.

Yea, it doesnt have an expiry date, thats why im asking

Im still running a 3930k and I think that all I really need is a GPU upgrade and the system is almost 5 years old.

If you're looking to build a new rig there's usually not a good reason to buy last gen's product, but if you already have it, it's not like the existence of something better means you need to upgrade immediately

Even after 6 years you can replace half the components and keep using the other half.

There is no need to replace the entire PC unless one or two decades pass and stuff like the PSU, storage, or case are obsolete standards.

My point is you shouldn't just blindly slap a date on it in years, that makes no sense.  You could find yourself needing an upgrade before then, or you could get to that many years old and find it's still perfectly acceptable.

There is no expire date. Some people continue to use their old hardware along with their new one.

I'm pretty sure my 8350 had an expiry date of "best by POST". 

 

I wouldn't consider upgrading until something better comes along by at least a good 50% in my use case, otherwise the cost negates whatever benefit I could have achieved.

Yea its nice to have old parts aswell like the hdd, ssd, case and psu thats take quite a while to become obselete so you can save money on your next build

It depends on you

Also some parts need replacement faster that others so you will probably be upgrading some parts.

Yeah my 8320 was just not enough for me. That's why I just upgraded to a Ryzen 5 1600. Massive difference even when just browsing the web.

For me, it depends on the part. I will probably upgrade my CPU and graphics card long before I throw out my case and drives

Some parts last longer than others. Storage is good until it dies, processes and motherboards are able to keep up for at least 4 years, graphics cards stay relevant for at least 2-3 years, peripherals are also good until they die. So I would likely never rebuild a pc from the ground up. I just change out parts as needed.

Upgrading the cpu is just a pain in the ass especially if your mobo doesnt support it and if you still have ddr3

honestly i'm on a 2 year constant upgrade cycle. a part or 2 get's upgraded every 2 years. so I guess that means it's a 4 year system renew since CPU and motherboard tend to go together (sometimes RAM). then there is GPU separately

 

and storage is added when needed,

and cooling is kind of a footnote

I am using computers that are 10 years old with no problem everyday. The laptop I use is 13 years old. Still, no problem. I don’t understand why people have to upgrade to a new system every 2 years when the old one is still overkill. All I can see being upgraded is CPU (Core 2 Duos for my system are cheap!), GPU, RAM and storage. Not a whole platform change.

I have a 3930k too and I went from 6850 to 7970 to  r9 290 to my current 1080 and I still don't feel like I have to upgrade the Cpu.

Actually I try to sell my PC as soon as I built it so I can always keep building something newer, my i7 6700 only last a year with me before I managed to sell it and build all over again with the i7 8700k, hopefully by the time Ice Lake releases I managed to sell the i7 8700k and this is an on going hobby to me personally.

 

I don't mind selling it at a small loss just to speed things up and have the bleeding edge :3
