Apple Advertising bs

Apple's advertising scheme for there latest iPad pro surprised me when I first saw it. Then I realized how typical of apple this is. PC industry is booming and so is Apple but why must Apple lie? Their under powered potato computers have Apple OS and that's what keeps them selling (and sheep mentality of apple consumers). For creators, the last viable Apple computer was the Apple Mac Pro from 2010-2012. That was one of the few relatively recent Apple computers that had a PC like design-you could swap out components such as RAM, GPU (if it had apple drivers), and CPU (if it was the right socket). Now, with the 2017 iMac, it takes 4 hours to swap out RAM or 600$ to upgrade to 32GB when you go to Apple-the RAM only cost $200. (link to video where 2017 iMac RAM is replaced at bottom with new apple ad). That's why we desperately need PCs: modular freedom that apple doesn't provide.

Everything is soldered now days. Also the PC industry is not booming at all it is on a steep fall.

I expected this. Having worked for a company that is a certified Apple Repair Center, in the legal and actually sense, we were able to do phone repairs, but Apple was constantly in us to stop touching there PC's. By contact, we weren't allowed to do hard drive installs, data backups (because the client should be paying for iCloud space), RAM upgrades, etc... We did it all anyways, but got in trouble several times. Swapped it a RAM when the client was being pushed a new MacBook... Dumb. Not a fan of Apple policies at all. Very anti consumer, and I feel like they do the soldering because they are tired of losing money to repair centers...

I don't really see the problem with this ad at all? For the everyday consumer a device that can run a web browser and Netflix is all they need. And that is all they show this person doing. I don't like Apple at all but there is nothing wrong with this ad.

I don't like the trend toward trying to replace PCs with limited mobile devices or soldered in memory, etc. either, but I don't think we really need to worry about that spreading beyond its own domain.  Trying is the key word above - no iPad is ever going to replace a serious gaming or workstation PC, and no serious custom workstation or gaming PC is ever going to come soldered together in an un-upgrade-able way.

If we're comparing stuff to computers that aren't user built, I'd gladly take an iMac over some crappy HP or Dell box with some funky mobo w/ locked BIOS. If someone isn't taking the time to build their own computer, they either A) don't need upgradability or B) have enough money to buy what they need right out of the box.

 

When's the last time someone bought a Dell Optiplex with the intention of upgrading it with off the shelf components that wasn't some niche project?

Opinions and use cases change though.  It's not that uncommon for someone to have a family computer and then decide to get into gaming, at which point - given the option - they can just add a GPU and be off to the races - again though, if given the option.  Take that away and suddenly the roadblock is a lot higher, and there's no real reason to make it a pain.

Apple titled this ad "What's a computer?" because they honestly don't know.

 

I don't think I would ever replace a PC or Laptop with anything Apple.

My point is it's useful for people who didn't plan it from the start.  Yeah, obviously if you had the intent to get a gaming PC you'd just do a custom build or at least get a quality OEM (puget systems ,etc.) but lots of people have an adequate PC already that with nothing more than a entry level video card (750 Ti, etc.) can become a perfectly respectable low-level gaming machine... if it's physically possible that is.

To be fair, I can see a little truth in what they've said (without watching the video mind you, I'm just assuming they're saying not a lot of people need full on PCs). Most people simply don't need a full on PC, and a solution that's just handed to them is better. Far too often us as enthusiasts forget that we're a very small percentage of the population, and that most people out there have no intention or desire to buy something that's upgradable, regardless of how much better it is.

 

I also disagree with the tone of your post. People are allowed to like what they like, and if that happens to be an Apple product, so be it. It does not make them sheep, it does not make them a "lesser" person. It's a different ecosystem, and they buy what Apple puts out.

I would agree. Last I checked, Apple doesn't have a monopoly in the computer industry (nor is a mega-corporation yet for that matter), so you're free to buy what fits your needs best
