Intel to stop supporting BIOS by 2020

Intel will stop supporting BIOS in all  "Client & Data Center Platforms" by 2020.

All products will only be delivered with UEFI, lacking the CSM (Compatability Support Module).

The consequence is that old 16bit operating systems like MS-Dos won't be able to start.

The systems will be in the UEFI-Class 3, respectively 3+. The latter are booting with secure boot.

Intel's Brian Richardson unveiled the schedule at the UEFI Plugfest in Taipei.

I don't think that this is really significant, as most systems already boot via UEFI.

It's about time legacy support got booted, Windows has been UEFI capable since 7 and UEFI compliant since 8, most major Linux distros are now compliant and macOS has been using EFI since forever.

If only they'd hurry up a drop 32 bit Windows too.

No, they will support it until 2020, after that they won't.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

If you want to use until, you need to say Intel will be supporting BIOS until 2020. Otherwise, it's Intel will stop support by/in 2020.
In other words: you do something until you don't or can't do something until you can.

Sounds like the UEFI consortium going "WTF GUYS WE MADE THIS FOR A REASON" ._.

Things change, if your software requires BIOS support then chances are you're running it on an older machine and older OS anyway.

Modern day cars don't required leaded petrol anymore, should we keep leaded petrol on sale forever because 15 years ago cars did require it?

Fuck UEFI and FUCK Bios!

Libreboot all the way!!!

AMD please release source code and specs of your technology called PSP (Platform Security Processor) for new AMD ryzen platforms!

Computer users fall into two groups:
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

Then you should change your title. Right now it says "Intel to stop supporting bios until 2020." That indicates that right now Intel is no longer supporting bios and at 2020 will start doing so again.

Change it to something like "Intel to stop supporting bios in 2020"

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

That's why people are finding it funny. I think English isn't your native language, so it's understandable... hell I know of many native English speakers that can't compose sentences properly and use the wrong words, so you're fine :)

they can't part of the security of these kinds of products is the lack of information on them, the moment they make it open source loads of people will have better access to info for them to try and break/crack the system

Security by obscurity? That's a bad idea.

its like telling everyone what is your alarm serial number, its not a good idea as them robbers will be able to know what that alarm can monitor and work around it, of course it isn't all the security it offers, but its a good part of the security,

That's wrong! Intels alternative IME is closed sourced too but do yu remember this?

There exist many opesource programs/OS which are more secure then cloused source and vulnerabilities get fixed much sooner and also they are discovered sooner :)

Security by obscurity is very very bad and it does not work for many of us!

I want them to opensource it so that it gets disabled and i can use libreboot on newer hardware too :)

They can opensource it without bad consequences, question is will they.
