Early estimates from UCL cryptocurrency researcher Patrick McCorry suggest that at least 600,000 ETH (worth around $150 million) is frozen. McCorry told TechCrunch said the total is likely to be higher still as more information about Parity usage and wallet volumes comes to light.

One high-profile company impacted is Polkadot, a project to link private-public blockchains that raised over $140 million in a token sale and was started by Parity co-founder Gavin Wood. Polkadot confirmed its wallets have been frozen and TechCrunch understands that 60 percent of its ICO raise is potentially affected.

 

Best thing is, the vulnerability was accidently triggered by a noob.

A bit more than 150 million...  Ars is reporting $280 million and Bleeping Computers has it at $285 million...

The bug specifically affects multi-signature wallets created with a digital contract after July 20. Multi-signature wallets have cryptographic security measures that require multiple users to sign a transaction in order for it to be processed and approved—an approach that allows for escrow contracts to control payments from accounts belonging to a group.

By calling a function from within Parity's wallet library, a wallet owner could turn a normal single-owner wallet created with Parity's wallet contract library code into a multi-signature wallet and take over ownership of it. That bug in the code would allow someone to kill contracts between any created with the most recent Parity code library—and that is exactly what happened. Someone managed to invoke the code as part of a wallet and made themselves part of every multi-signature contract created since the bug was introduced into the code. The user then "suicided" the wallet and, in the process, disabled all the multi-signature contracts that had been created since July 20 by making them "suicide" as well.

And Bleeping Computers talks about one potential solution to unlock the wallets involves a Hard Fork in Etherium...

So as I understand, it was caused by a mistake of a single newbie that caused a huge bug? That about an oversight.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Perhaps itbeill detere some people from farming and give consumers the upper hand on the gpu market ! (Let me dream ok ?)

Was reading this.. somewhere, i forget where, earlier, and it was only estimated at $150m worth then and the majority of it belonged to a company, I guess they underestimated the effect of it at first.

The only way this gets resolved is to revert the kill in the hardfork that is already planned (which already has precedence because of something kinda sorta similar that happened last year), or for every company that is effected to just eat the cost and give back their customers what they had, or for nothing to happen and people go "lol whelp that's what you get for investing in cryptocurrency".

I would like to know how hard conventional digital currency is to kill like this.  I mean we have banks, shops, governments, departments and so on shifting Billions of dollars in 1's and 0's every day, so I wonder how much accidentally goes missing/frozen/deleted that can't be recovered?

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

But they are aware of that and make allowances.  I'm more wondering about things like when the work experiences student pushes a button and accidentally deletes the days transactions before they are backed up or can be reconciled.
