Will The Jump To Volta Be as Significant as From Maxwell To Pascal?

I've heard rumours that volta is just a microarchitecture from its predecessor and wont yield that much of a performance increase compared to the leap that pascal had from maxwell. Is it true?

In order to answer that question we would have to see Volta benchmarks that don't engage the tensor cores at all and compare them to their Pascal equivalent. AFAIK nobody's done them.

I'm gonna guess that we're gonna get a minute improvement (maybe 30% like older generations of Nvidia cards) over Pascal. There's no competitive reason for them to tryhard like there was with Pascal.

Sucks, why can't AMD just deliver for once, they always fuck things up with either high TDPs and bad price to performance

the higher end models will definitely have an ice crush setting , mid to lower end will only be for fruits and veggies of course.

Volta is as i understand it, just Pascal with a few new Tensor cores baked in. if those cant be levraged for games then there isnt going to be an especially big improvement here and im pretty sure thats what the compute card market has said as well

I don't think it will be. Maxwell to Pascal is the exception, not the rule.

For someone that doesn't follow hardware as closely as you guys do, what was that reason? Was AMD more competitive prior to Pascal?

Yes, Pascal was a big improvement.

 

For example the AMD R9 290 released in late 2013 for $400 (a bit slower than the higher-end 290X) was a bit faster than Nvidia's GTX 780 at the time, and the GTX 780 Ti that edged out the 290X was more expensive than the 290X. With Nvidia's 900 series they got a power efficiency edge on AMD but AMD was competitive in performance, maybe a little better value at different price points.

 

AMD subsequently did some refreshes than then some expensive cards in the Fury line, first with HBM (hence expensive, and the chips being huge), that were better performers but not incredibly so.

 

The issue is AMD Polaris products slotting in not too far from the performance of the R9 290 and R9 290X, despite it being that much later... and these Polaris cards are still AMD's best under the expensive Vega line. Polaris didn't gain enough power efficiency for gaming over AMD's previous stuff, while Pascal gained lots for Nvidia over Maxwell (900 series), so AMD is way behind on power efficiency. Also performance per die area. Well, I guess part of the issue is AMD having to run at relatively high clocks/volts for them to not be even further behind on performance. So Nvidia can price things how they want and make more profits.

 

 

But the design of the architecture is done years in advance of a product launch, so it's not like Nvidia came up with Volta and were designing chips knowing how far ahead they'd be by now. It's just that they're definitely in no rush for the consumer card product launches because they aren't being pressured by competition. And when they do go ahead, they can probably go with relatively small chips and tame configs.

 

Nvidia's doing just fine shipping Voltas for AI and other compute for a while.

I hope so  but without an architectural change to a smaller transistor then im not sure if the leap would be as big as its "advertised" here.

The 390 was just an outright better buy than Nvidia's volume seller 970.

Volta isn't out yet, we can't know how significant the Performance gain will be. Simple as that.

Anything here is no opinion, but pure speculation or wish thinking.

 

maybe pascal  jump was only because of the 28 nm -> 16nm shrink. In which case, volta won't bring such a huge boost.

Maybe Volta will get a huge shader core bump.

Lol maxwell to pascal was utter shit. 980tis OCed performing the same as 1080 FEs and outperforming 1070s EPIC FAIL. The 1080ti is cool but no where near worth $750. The next gen is suppose to be a refresh too except the Titan so expect not a big jump at all

you're kidding right? the GTX 980 Ti traded blows with the GTX 1070 for half the price and it also runs hotter so you'll need a beefier cooler. also i find people who make the argument "get the gtx 1070 and overclock it to match the performance of the 1080" are dumb because who said you can't overclock the 1080 too? obviously each card has its own headroom for OCing, same with the people who say get a r5 1600 and overclock it to match the 1600x, it just doesn't work like that. if that were the case there would only be two cards; the GTX 1060 and the GTX 1080 since the 1060 can overclock to match the 1070 right? but wait the 1050 Ti can be overclocked to match the 1060 too?
