Socket AM4 APUs hits retail

NumLock21
Quote

We have some good news for low-power AMD builders this morning: AMD has (finally) begun to sell the 35W versions of their "Bristol Ridge" desktop APUs. Overall the company has released 3 35W retail Bristol Ridge SKUs, the A12-9800E, A10-9700E, and A6-9500E, with these chips fleshing out the low-power segment of AMD's AM4 platform through the end of the year.

AMD APU for socket AM4 has hit retail. Now builders can get their hands on one of those cpus for a budget friendly build.

I am not a gamer anymore, so I am waiting for Zen based APUs in order to update. Don't need dGPU as the iGPU seems to be good enough for almost every task besides gaming for me.

I'm especially curious about gaming performance as these are probably single CCX APUs. Definitely would be interesting to do a comparison of those vs. the 4 core Ryzen CPUs.

In a few months they will be. Though dates still seem up in the air.

These were actually released last December(?), but we're pretty much OEMs in China & Germany. I don't know why.

The A12-9800 is just a slightly better A10-7870k. 100Mhz+ turbo, 300Hz GPU turbo, 30w less tdp.

I am patiently waiting to see some Raven Ridge CPU's

Raven Ridge (the Zen-based APUs) will be 1 CCX + 1/8th of a RX Vega. There's a lot of interesting technical details we just don't know yet and a bunch of us are curious about. When not using the GPU, it should be similar to the Ryzen 3s. RAM might not OC as far, though. Or even at all. We, well, don't know yet.

Even though it's Excavator still an interesting option for a passivly cooled Mini ITX machine.

The upgrade path to Zen APUs is also there so not bad actually.

well its zen + vega, these were released to OEM before, so I see this as a way to get rid of the remaining stock.

How can they use an old arch on a new socket meant for a newer and vastly different architecture? As we are reminded frequently "Zen was built from the ground up". Really hope they didn't waste much time during zen development on making the AM4 socket compatible with the old FM sockets and rather this was an after thought that seemed possible and turned out to be luckily for them with maybe only a few tweaks to the pre-existing APUs and some new bios updates.

Yay for getting rid of old inventory but don't sacrifice money and or development time to a dead and inferior architecture if your not making gains from the move and spending less time on designing a new APU based off the new CPU architecture (zen) to stay competitive with intel's current iGPUs.

*Ryzen 5s. Since hyperthreading :P

In fact it MAY beat Ryzen 5 CPUs due to only 1 CCX. Of course, we should wait for benchmarks to say for sure.

It is possible, BUT, if they were able to beat the Ryzen 5 quad cores, they would probably cost more than $200 which is quite expensive (for an APU anyways) :S

When it comes to APUs, I'll wait until they come up with a chip that puts a 4 GB or 8 GB HBM2 memory chip with the cpu and the gpu and makes using DDR4 memory completely optional.

Think how much space in a device would be saved by not having to place and wire 4+ DDR3/DDR4 memory chips, or not needing to place so-dimm slots on circuit board and how much power would be saved by disabling or taking out completely the ddr memory controller.

If it wasn't so damn expensive they would have made it already - the silicon interposer on which the cpu and gpu and memory chip would be placed on costs maybe 10-15$ but the HBM2 memory chip costs a ton, right now maybe 60-80$ per chip because only Samsung makes them in volume. Such expensive cpu just wouldn't sell right now.

Sigh... a 2 core / 4 thread 10-15w tdp cpu with graphics and 4 GB of memory would be perfect for a 7-10" tablet or light notebook (movie player, gps, book reader etc)

They could even make APUs with 2 HBM2 memory dies , and make them with either 2 x 4 GB dies or 2 x 8 GB dies and maybe invent memory DLCs ... buy cpu with half the memory enabled and enter a serial key in the bios (or flash a new bios) to enable the other memory chip after you pay a few bucks.

Yeah, What you probably want if you're in the market is Raven Ridge with it's Ryzen/Vega based APU. (and before someone clever say something about Vega power consumption, it's actually really efficient at low clock.)
