What do you do with older CPU Coolers?

EnergyEclipse

From all of the systems I've pulled from skips, be donated and have salvaged from there is one thing I have always kept  a hold of regardless of condition. That being the CPU Cooler. I have those fiddly rather apache helicopter like Intel stock coolers, the wind whistling FM2+ coolers and the rather laughable remains of OEM Cooler Master coolers.

But what do you do with them? Do you zip tie them to the wrong sockets, or leave them for use in a system you'll probably actually never restore?

Let me know by leaving a reply down below! :D

@fpo That is epic, rofl. I use my old ones to cut up/scavenge to make custom mod stuff. Fins, blocks, heat tubes, etc. can come in handy. Thinking about making something for an M.2 drive. Not needed, but that's beside the point as I'm ... mad as a hatter. They do run remarkably hot though, and I wonder what the long term effects will be on the bits underneath them on the mobo. Sooo...why not. Can't really do anything big right now, so it's more of something to keep me busy.

Best Excuses:

#1(simple) "Well, I never liked that stupid thing anyway!"

#2(complex) "Obviously there was a flaw in the material, probably due to the inadvertent introduction of contaminants during the manufacturing process."

What? If your fan dies, your cooler becomes useless?

Personally, I sell the metal to scrapyards or use them for donated or sold builds.

I have a box filled with them, all carefully cleaned and stacked nicely. One I chopped up to see if I could make a heatsink for a Raspberry Pi which actually made the Pi heat up alarmingly so that was thrown out .

Eventually I will die and by then hopefully there will be a few more boxes of them around which I can leave to my children , who can weigh them in for scrap metal prices which will be enough to buy a cardboard box to bury me in

Sounds cool! If you get a microcomputer like a raspberry pi or arduino I hear they make heat sinks for them. Maybe you can do a youtube tutorial on how to make your own haha.

Haha, you should definitely eat it hot. But because a Microwave is designed to boil water as swiftly as possible, it'd be like licking a pot of boiling spaghetti hahaha.

...Or Spatzle if you have it in your region.

Yes, one eats food when it's hot, but not where it burns their mouth.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

Id look at Copper or aluminium pricing depending on what the cooler is made out of. Might be worth money in scrap.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Not a bad idea! :D Although were I live the car scrap yards take cars like the older Citroen Picassos and Vauxhall Corsas off you for literally £11, so for a CPU which pales in metal weight compared I don't think they'd be any point xD
