The Skylake-X Mess Explored: Thermal Paste And Runaway Power

It's me!

Fine, then tell me a card that I can really crank up the heat output with a shunt mod for my ridiculous pipe dream of a loop with enough rad space to make Done12 blush.

If it takes multiple PSUs to power the monstrosity, then so be it.

Kepler's scaled quite well with shunt mods, lol. Had a friend with 780's that pulled 400w+ each, and he had 3 of them.

A typical room has 4 walls... hmmm...

You can replace at least two of them with rad space. One wall for the intake, one for the outtake.

28,800cm2 radspace should be enough. Have to order 240 12cm fans though. lol

Guy's, I've had a thought. Maybe it's been brought up before, but has anyone considered why Intel would use this sort of shitty thermal paste on their high end CPUs? I've heard the longevity argument and there may be some truth to that, but I've got to thinking it may be something else.

Let's think about it like this: who are the people that OC CPUs? Enthusiasts right? When overclocking a CPU, do enthusiasts generally stop halfway? Probably not (at least I don't). What's a good way to kill a CPU? Pushing too far or not knowing what you're doing. When you kill a CPU it has historically been covered under warranty so you can get a new one. Well, technically it isn't, but there's no real way to prove you were overclocking.

Enter: bad thermal paste. Today, how does an enthusiast get the best overclocks? Well, you first need to delid and then push your CPU. And what does delidding do? It voids your warranty and there's not any way to hide the fact that it has been done. So now if your CPU dies, Intel doesn't have to send you a new one.

Now, one could argue that you don't have to delid to overclock and that's true. I'd argue though that the subset of the population that is more likely to kill CPUs from pushing too far is the same piece that is going to be interested in delidding. For most normal people the bad thermals won't matter because they'd stop at a moderate OC or not OC at all regardless of how hot the CPU is getting.

Maybe it's just a crazy conspiracy theory, and they are never going to admit to it, but it seems possible.

TL;DR: bad thermal paste avoids warranty claims from overclockers who will do what it takes to push their CPU.

He does get free shit from Asus and I believe he is sponsored in some sort of way. The only good thing I gather from his videos is a better board from Asus. Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way especially if other manufacturers take heed to it and improve their future products. That's a good thing that can come from it but the fact he worked with Asus on their improvements does give you the impression he was wanting Asus to make a better board.

I too am thinking about selling my MSI board down the line and getting the Apex. It was the board I wanted all along but I needed to jump in to X299 now and reap its benefits. I'm expecting it to cost north of $600 so I don't know how good I feel about spending more on a mobo than CPU. I'm pretty happy with the MSI board as it suits my needs very good. We'll see.

I am beyond confident that there are absolutely no VRM related issues with the Gigabyte Gaming 7.  It uses the same 2 block attached via a heatpipe design as the redesigned Asus x299 Apex.  Big difference between the Gaming 3 originally used in der8auer's "x299 VRM Disaster" video.  My decision to switch to Apex is solely based off of BIOS and memory performance.  Memory performance is great on the Gaming 7, but it will almost certainly be better on the Apex due to shorter trace routing.

Luckily I bought my Gaming 7 from Micro Center and I'm still withing the 15-day return window.  I just need to decide if it's worth having the 7900X laying around for 2 or 3 weeks without a motherboard, or should I return it and grab the 7920X in August (if rumors are true)  Decisions, decisions.

Yeah, 1 DIMM.2 slot is fed straight to the CPU and the other via the DMI.  The board is just sweet man!

Memory DIMM on/off switches along with PCIe slot on/off switches.  This literally makes setting up any configuration for benching as simple as turning shit on / off.

Haha doesn't fry? Mind providing a source for the 7800x frying the $200 mobos?

Source that lower end CPU coolers can't maintain a manageable temperature? I'm pretty sure that something like an H7 would be totally fine, even for some light overclocking. That brings the price down to around... oh... $700 now, eh? That's not to mention you're, overall, getting a better mobo (the base x299 boards are better than the b350 boards). That's not to mention that $920 isn't double $520 :P

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.
