HP Reverb G2 - cable extension

Szynek

Hello,

As in the title, I wanted to extend the HP Reverb G2 (VR headset), probably by ~3 meters (I'd prefer 5 meters, but don't want to risk it), as current setup is a bit too short, If I understand correctly, I need:

- USB extension or hub, most likely active-powered (amplified?)

- DP extension, + most likely DP amplifier/repeater (both should support my native resolution and refresh rate).

The thing is, that G2's resolution is 2160 x 2160 per eye (so 4320 x 2160 overall) so a little MORE than 4k (but also NOT 5k/8k), and then it is 90Hz (NOT 60Hz/120Hz/144Hz); meanwhile, most of the specs for cables and amplifiers gives you really selective set of info, like "this supports 8k@60Hz and also 4k@120Hz", and I'm confused as to how it translates to my situation. There's also this problem of some products having say `3840x2160 @ 60Hz` in the product info, but then `3840x2160 @ 120Hz` somewhere in the description.

So for example does this combo have any chance of working:

* USB hub --> https://www.amazon.pl/Sabrent-10-portowy-indywidualnymi-wlącznikami-sieciowymi/dp/B0797NZFYP

* USB hub cable --> https://www.amazon.pl/Cable-Matters-Kabel-kolorze-czarnym/dp/B00C7RZPJ0

* DP cable --> https://www.amazon.pl/UGREEN-DisplayPort-Obsluguje-Graficzną-Telewizor/dp/B088H46Q3Y

* DP amplifier --> https://www.amazon.pl/DisplayPortTM-aktywny-repeater-wzmacniacz-sygnalu/dp/B08BFT1SFD

Alternatively, Cable Matters has both DP cable and amplifier (one of them even certified), but there's a matter of confusing description, as it claims to do `3840x2160 @ 60Hz` in some places (which would have definitely been not enough):

* https://www.amazon.pl/Cable-Matters-Certyfikat-DisplayPort-rozdzielczością/dp/B07J2PGGFX

* https://www.amazon.pl/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-przedlużacz-rozdzielczości/dp/B07D949F59

Also for the record, I am aware that there are 2-3 reddit topics about it, but those are couple years old, some of them with not fully-working links, so maybe there is some better solution nowadays.

FYI the general procedure would be this:

Refer to the pinned cable guide, select "DisplayPort".

Opening paragraph:

What DisplayPort cable do I need?

DisplayPort cables are not classified by a "version number". There are no "DP 1.2 cables" or "DP 1.4 cables". DisplayPort cables are rated by maximum transmission speed, such as "HBR2 cable" or "HBR3 cable".

To determine what DisplayPort cable rating you need, it is as simple as checking what transmission speed you need, and getting a cable with that rating. The transmission speed you need is based on your monitor's video format. The table above can be used for quick reference for standard formats. [...] For non-standard formats, or for different options such as 10 bpc color depth (HDR), you can use the calculator at the bottom of this guide.

Using linked calculator:

https://linustechtips.com/topic/729232-guide-to-display-cables-adapters-v2/?section=calc&mode=maxfreq&H=4320&V=2160

Looks like HBR3 rating will be enough for 90 Hz.

So you need a VESA-certified cable rated for HBR3.

In this case apparently your headset needs some kind of special treatment, as I see active cables saying this:

Important Notes

  • This active extension cable is NOT compatible with DisplayPort to HDMI, DVI, or VGA converter cables This Cable is unidirectional.
  • The Male DisplayPort connector MUST be connected to a computer, and the female connector MUST be connected to another DisplayPort cable or a VR headset cable
  • Oculus Rift S will not initiate the DisplayPort connection if USB 3.0 does not work. Make sure your USB 3.0 port/cable is working properly before adding this DisplayPort cable.
  • Not Compatible with HP Reverb G2 VR Headset

But without knowing exactly why, it makes it hard to predict what will work and what won't without testing it.

This one has a review saying it worked with the G2, but it will need to be paired with a passive HBR3 cable and have an external USB connection for power.

Ok, thank you for the explanation, this was actually very helpful.

So it seems like my alternatives are exactly what I was looking for; both are HBR3, and from Cable Matters (and not even super-expensive):

* https://www.amazon.pl/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-przedlużacz-rozdzielczości/dp/B07D949F59

I hope that this USB hub is going to work as well (it is USB 3, and it has external power source).

Not sure what that statement refers to (?).
