Persona 5 is out now! Streamers be Wary

I'm pulling this from a Waypoint article, but it has been posted elsewhere on the web...  Persona 5 released in the US today and to avoid spoilers via Streams & Lets Play videos, Atlus is continuing with an 'aggressive' policy from the Japan release.  According to the article:

A blog published by Atlus today warns that unless specific guidelines are followed, you're at risk at getting hit with a content ID claim, channel strike, or account suspension on YouTube. In light of today's streaming culture, it's a bold move in the other direction.

As for what the guidelines are, they consist as follows:

They're asking people speak in "broad strokes" about the plot, and to not record or stream any content beyond July 7. (That's more than 20 hours into the game.)

 

It gets more specific, though:

 

  • You can post however many additional videos you'd like, but please limit each to be at most 90 minutes long.
  • No major story spoilers, and I'll leave that up to your good judgment. If you need some guidelines, avoid showing/spoiling the ending segments of the first three palaces. While you can show initial interactions with Yusuke, avoid his awakening scene, and that whole deal about THE painting. Also, don't post anything about a certain student investigator.
  • I know I mentioned not showing the end of each palace, but you can grab footage from the Kamoshida boss fight. However, don't capture video from the other major boss fights.
  • Must not focus solely on cutscenes/animated scenes, should prominently feature dungeon crawling/spending time in Tokyo.
  • You can post straight gameplay or have commentary.

If you're streaming, there's no cap on length. Why? Great question. (It probably has to do with Atlus having more control over content on YouTube vs. Twitch.)

To aid in this endeavor, the recording software built into the PS4 has been disabled.  Atlus also warns that if you use an external capture card to bypass this:  .

A part of me can kinda support this to avoid unintentional spoilers, but it seems a bit heavy handed in it's implementation and I honestly don't care for this kind of approach.

I completely agree with Atlus here. The story and time they put into it should pay off for them.

People will post videos and stream past their "July 7 rule." The game's dev can't bully people into not streaming their game, not in the US at least. Game developers have tried and failed to control people posting gameplay and commentary of their games, and I do not think this game dev will succeed in the USA.

Other game developers put tons of time and money into developing good stories, but those developers don't disallow people from streaming their games. I do no think this is an exception in any way. Atlus can remove videos showcasing cutscenes and such (with NO commentary, since it would be breaking copyright law,) but commentary videos will remain. The article even cites Nintendo's review policies, which I'm sure many people have broken and will not be punished for (because Nintendo does not have any authority over reviewers as far as what they spoil and such.)

Normaly i love Atlus. They make some really good RPGs, but this I really can't defend.
I posted this in other places, but I do find it VERY ironic that the central theme of the game is "Fighting for Freedom", and "Break the Shackles of Life" (Their own words). Yet they try to chain down what streamers can and can't do with the game.

- Now apparently according multiple friends with the PS4 version (I only have the PS3 version), the game constantly goes into a "You can't stream this!" mode every couple of minutes in the beginning.  - Yeah the first hour of the game is considered spoilers...
It even goes into the "No stream!" mode in weird places like the players room...

Honestly the game has been out in Japan for at least half a year already. There are already spoilers all over the internet, so this is kinda pointless and just causes unneeded anger on release date.
- Oh yeah and it's kinda shitty they announce this policy on release day! They should have announced this a week ago, but then again that might have gotten people to cancel their pre orders.

Oh well I guess that is somewhat understandable. I guess they should just ask streamers and YouTuber's to please not spoil the game without clearly indicating the video contains spoilers. More of a courtesy gesture rather then a threat.

I'd say Atlus is doing it the right way. They aren't saying don't play, they're saying "don't post the story" as the only objective. It's easy for a Youtuber/streamer to go for a quick cash-grab, but it's in the better interest for Atlus and the community to disallow any story segments from being spoiled.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. It's not like you can go on youtube and oh look, a recommended video has the spoiler about ome of main characters dying in last chapter of the game you are playing. Or a huge spoiler of some shows season finale. Youtubers have morale. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Seems very hard to enforce and heavy handed, but it really feels like they are doing it to protect consumers from having their experience ruined, and not for personal gains.

I remember watching Clannad and after listening to the ending song on youtube a few times I started getting "<insert name here> death scene" in my recommendations.

Sorry, but if you're worried about spoilers but are watching streams of the game or videos that say "Let's Play Persona 5" then it is your own fault.

 

Honestly, to some companies streaming and Let's Plays are the new version of piracy and they use content ID and such as some sort of anti piracy measure but they disguise it as them trying to protect consumers from spoilers rather than as an attempt to guard/inflate the company's wallets.
