Comcast rolling out cap naitonwide

I feel for all of you with caps, here in NL we do not have them and never did. 

 

I wonder why ISPs bother in the first place. It is not like they have extra cost for extra data? Could it be that their back end simply cannot sustain the speeds they deliver in the last mile? Like if your backend has a bandwith of 1Gbit and you connect 20 people with 300 Mbit connections, you need to do something to prevent them from pulling 300Mbit 24/7  

 

Like that is the exact reason we have caps on mobile. But common that is a wireless connection and totally shitty to facilitate in the first place. Plus here in NL we have really unlimited plans already.

I had a 300gb cap for years and i hit the cap so many times. Funny enough, Comcast will remove your data cap for an additional $30 USD...

 

 

I dont see how they get away with this shit, its honestly mind boggling.

It really sounds to me like they are saying "We cant be bothered to keep our infrastructure up to date and we have no competition anyway so how bout you pay some more?"

its such a dumb move, the only thing thats finite is the throughput of data, the more data they deliver to your door the more powerfull their hardware has to be.

It's really not that hard if you have multiple people in your house, people using netflix + downloading things all the time, etc. Since the first of October I've already used nearly 1TB lol

If you are on a contract with them and they did not have language for a cap when you signed, they cannot legally give you a cap unless you agree to a new contract with new terms. That means that they are violating their end of the legal agreement and a liable to lawsuits. They can only legally apply this to new customers or customers that already had the language written into their contract.

 

I don't have Comcast but anyone effected by this needs to look at their original contract with them and see if they can even legally cap you.

At&t Uverse caps me at 200gb a month, it's a damn crime especially when I'm paying out the ass for 45mb/s and I'm forced to rent their router/modem.

A couple people having YouTube and Netflix open often will get you pretty close. That ignores downloading anything else. I go through a couple hundred gigs just on YouTube alone.

we've used 400gb already in a week..

5 people.. no netflix. all youtube probably.

Which would be fine if they didn't have almost a monopoly on certain areas. American ISPs have shown they can't be trusted and need to be forced to compete against their will: No more buyouts, no more zone exclusivity in fact the telecommunications infrastucture shouldn't be a completely private sector at all: it should be government contracts just like roads.

I'm fine with it being private sector if the FCC enforces consumer protection laws, and anti competitive legislation is revoked

That's over 5x the size of my data cap so I don't feel bad at all. Does anyone know if they use peering to not count data against you?

If they fail the results are often irreversible or extremely hard to combat. Going back to the same analogy this is one we don't just trust any one company to build and maintain all roads on one area. It should be a constant competition. Something that ironically enough, pure Capitalism cannot guarantee.

You have to log into your XFINITY account.  There should be a services tab.  Click Internet and that should give you a link to a usage meter.

I don't come close to using 1TB a month and I'm still offended! Do we get a discount now that our unlimited data is now limited? A lesser plan should cost less.

Honestly, for $50 extra month, you might just be better off upgrading to a business-class account.  No bandwidth caps and you get priority whenever there is an outage or other service problem.  If I'm not mistaken, the customer service works differently as well.  You can actually talk to domestic customer service representatives.
