iPhone 7 - Performance Results

According to Pocket now, a source has tested the iPhone 7 and in some ways it is exceeding beyond the benchmarks (I guess they mean it went "off the charts"). Personally I find it amusing that a brand like Apple, which according to most has no innovation (not that it matters regarding this matter but still), is smashing all the other phones is some benchmarks.

Yes, and if you measure how high it bounces when you let it fall maybe another phone will beat it. Selecting a few synthetic benchmarks has pretty much the same value. I'm sure the single core performance is better than the competition, but it doesn't matter since in this case only total cpu performance counts - unlike on the desktop, android software has no problems taking advantage of many cores because of how widespread quads are.

 

It probably also has very good i/o performance, but that's nothing new. High performance is not innovation anyway - you may be confusing words here.

It's not "very good", it completely shatters the competition and will continue to do so well into 2017. It's the fastest phone in day to day usage. You can trow multi core scores at me how much you want, I refuse to believe there is a single app on the appstore that is as well optimized as Geekbench.

Actually, in the mobile space Apple has been leading in terms of CPU horsepower for a very long time. Qualcomm still leads in GPU horsepower because of their acquisition of AMDs mobile GPU division a while back, but Apple has been continuously crushing the competition in single threaded performance. Some people bash on them for having used dual core CPUs until the iPhone 7, but apples single threaded performance was so good that their dual core CPUs quite often could beat competing quad cores. The Apple A9 for example is probably the most powerful smartphone SoC out there (with the exception of the a10), and the iPhone 7 has just claimed the throne with the a10. The myth that they have "no innovation" is made up by PC and android fanboys that like bashing on Apple for no reason. I think a lot of their products are a bit expensive, but I admire Apple for their innovations (force touch/3D touch, great SOCs, there's gotta be more but I can't think of them right now).

The fact that mobile SoC are improving at this rate especially when Apple tops the chart every year is a true innovation. Last time checked only Intel used to do that (and even got most innovative company credit for it) till AMD  kind of last their way

 

And really android is optimized for quad cores? Then why isn't android phones with the best qualcomm chipsets unable to beat Apple A series chip when android chipsets are octa cores and Apple's chips a dual core. The multi core score for android usually edges out Apple's after a while and based on your claim android apps should run faster and better if it were the case

 

Please don't bring up some lame ass excuses to somehow deny Apple didn't innovate. Either appreciate them or just don't comment

More cores mean more heat produced, which means they must run more slowly. 

 

Quad cores should lose to dual core processors in terms of raw speed. Not to mention that most mobile apps aren't designed to make use of more than 2 cores anyways.

I don't remember the last tine i cared about raw performance when shopping for a phone. Screen, camera (which i think the 7 jas a good one), headphone jack are the kinds of things Im looking at... features. Guess its cause I dont phone game

Well Sprint and T-Mobile have reported 375% higher sales in the first 3 days. So either iSheep or people don't care about the headphone thing as much as it sounds. People didn't buy it because of performance either as results weren't even out yet within that time frame. Cool perf but I think I'll wait.

Well what boggles my mind is that theyve been targeting mobile games for some time. I would never buy a phone without a headphone jack or maybe 2 lightning or 2 usbc plugs, but I could probably get away without it. I almost never use my phone while charging, however if I played mobile games or watched videos often, I would

From my view, sd820 and a9 are all fast enough SoCs that can provide enough horsepower for day to day use of a phone. We dont really need out of the roof benchmarks imo. At least my iphone 6+ is snappy enough that I dont want a faster SoC in the near future. So I dont really call a faster a10 a innovation, since, at least its a innovation that ppl dont really benefit from.

plus, I am thinking maybe smart phone industry has reached it limit since every possible way of utilizing a handset to bring convenience to our life is already been developed, and that's why innovation is pretty hard. Like no matter how apple innovate to provide a super SoC it still wont beat a intel i7 6700k + gtx 1080. that is for sure! and honestly we dont need it to. Companys now are just struggling to find a new spot to excite their customer to buy their new products.

I wont blame it on sd 820, since samsung is pushing 1440p on it and apple is still around 1080p or less iirc. I believe oneplus3 or other 1080p sd820 phone can push it to 60fps. but i dont really play huge games on phones so I dont really give it much thoughts.

I want one, want one, want one... get one! This is pretty good news for me, since i mostly use my phone for "entertainment" purposes :D. Clearly whoever says Iphones "A" cpu's are underwhelmed by the remainder of the competition, with respect to the Exynos lineup for its power efficiency and integer performance, is out of its damn mind and is acting anti-Apple. Like one used to say, "Never go full (insert something here)".

Yeah when I play games I always turn the brightness all the way up and plug it in.

Sorry for bothering you with facts. Let me reiterate that, as the video (and the very geekbench leaks that @patrick3027 so adamantly refers to) states, the iphone beats the competition in some benchmarks. Keyword, some. To be more precise, these are the single core benchmarks and the i/o benchmarks. So yes, octa core android phones do in fact beat the iphone in a multithreaded benchmark. Would you like to show me a situation where top performance is needed, but the android app doesn't use four cores? (and by the way, most octas are not actually octas - they only use 4 cores at a time).

 

If iterative performance gains are "innovation", then pretty much every chip designer is an innovator, pushing out innovations every year. Apple has used the same general design philosophy in their chips for years, whereas some of its competitors have gotten pretty damn creative to overcome performance and power consumption limits. If you want to compare apple to intel, let me remind you that intel has their own foundries, process nodes and instruction set that they develop by themselves at a rate nobody else has been able to match recently. Apple designs their chips using someone else's foundries, instruction set and package features.

 

But sure, I'm the one bringing up lame excuses, not the guy feeling the need to instantly deny any criticism directed at apple. Appreciate or don't comment? Really? "Agree with me or shut up, thanks!".

I will say this : apple makes very good SOC's , and they have the only nvme phones on the market . But ram is lackluster ( even though ios has great memory management ) , the " retina" screens are outdated (  1334 x 750 anyone ? ) , battery life is poor and they seem to always have issues ( iphone 4 had "death grip" , iphone 5 had scuffgate , iphone 6 and 6s had bendgate and issues with the wireless IC chip causing phones to fail ) . And more recently they abandoned the headphone jack , meaning you need several adapters if you plant to use anything else than bluetooth or proprietary headphones . 

 

I'm not taking sides with anyone here , but i'm just reminding you that there is a reason apple gets criticized once in a while

It's pretty hard to compare ARM to ARM when they use different operating systems. For example game performance will be affected by resolution, sure, but the bigger culprit is that Apple uses their own Metal API vs Android being stuck on OpenGL until recently and even then it's uncertain how many developers will switch to Vulkan.

Then we have general system performance; sure there is a difference in hardware but the software will be the bigger issue here. Android and iOS do things very differently and generally the iOS approach is better for UI smoothness for example. We also have the heavy optimization that some Android vendors don't do. I'm sure if Apple switched out the Ax chip for another ARM-based chip that the iPhone would still have similar system performance.

 

Also, the SD820 kinda sucks. A72 and M1 cores are better. SD820's apparent success is because of the move to FinFET and the move away from A57 when compared to the 810 which it mostly is. Qualcomm would need to really bring the heat with the 830 if they want to show their monopoly is deserved. Currently they maintain their market share and get their design wins through superior modems, shady deals and decent support for OEMs and developers. Rumor has it that Samsung is working towards completely ditching Qualcomm within two years. That would be bad for them. Imagine if Samsung opened up Exynos more for developers while expanding their business by offering it to more OEMs. Imagine 14nm Exynos chips with equal or better modems and supposedly Nvidia or AMD tech on the GPU. They have a golden opportunity to try to oust Qualcomm completely if they play their cards right.

TL;DR Qualcomm is kinda doing like Intel in the desktop market except they've also fallen behind on performance meaning they just suck. People often compare the Apple chips to Qualcomm's but Qualcomm is not the best on the market, just the most ubiquitous. It isn't a justified position anymore.

this is similar to ARM's big.LITTLE approach , meaning not all cores should run at the same time . Not to mention there has been improvements in manufacturing processes since the 6s , so chips should produce less heat

I haven't watched the video but I have heard the iPhone tops the charts in Geekbench and Antutu. And honestly single core is the one that actually matters in the real world. As I said, show me a computational android app that performs faster than the iOS app, like lapse it or some kind of a cross platform movie editor because last time I checked the 6S beats most android flagships. And btw these are real documented facts if you didn't know

 

and btw I know that octa core is implementation of big.LITTLE, but I remember reading that some phones can indeed take advantage of all 8 cores if needed

Let me stop you right there. If Apples design is iterative that explains why they keep topping charts year after year. At least that or the competition is lazy AF which is highly unlikely. Like? As far as I know and it's a fact ARM is the one who introduced big.LITTLE and the competition hasn't been doing anything rather than turning quad core into octa core with pretty much no difference both in real world and synthetic benchmark (by a much)

Yeah I know that. But where Apple stands out is that they're able to take something that already exists in the market and make it massively better then what others haven't even come close to. Now that is a true feat by the engineering team at Apple despite how much ever you want to downplay it

One important distinction with Apple's approach: as I understand things, it uses hardware to determine which cores are necessary, not software.  That lets it switch faster and reduce overhead compared to Android's approach.

 

With that said: folks, this is quickly devolving into irrational shouting.  Here's the reality as I see it: while you shouldn't oversell the iPhone 7's performance as a be-all, end-all factor, it does matter.  Faster performance improves both the subjective feel of the device and widens the potential for tasks that wouldn't be practical otherwise.  Take Apple's on-device machine learning, for example -- that needs CPU power.  It likely also helps with the 7 Plus' dual-camera system, especially as Apple moves toward more computation-heavy features like depth of field effects.

 

There are areas where octa-core and standard quad-core (that is, no low-power cores) chips would come out ahead, but in day-to-day use, I don't think they'd show up.

iPhones never had "Retina" screens, as far as I know only Macbooks and iPads have been marketed as such. but in all honesty 720p (ish) is fine on most small (ish) phones and I think 1080p should be the limit. I don't even like the idea of high res then 1080p on laptops.
