What adbp plans todo is replace all the "bad" adverts with "good" ones.

anything it deems too big, too ugly, or too intrusive — with good ads, ones that are smaller, subtler, and theoretically much less annoying.

I like this idea as it will stop those really scammy adverts but isn't it kinda against the whole we don't like adverts premise as adverts need to grab attention to work... And if they don't clients just wouldn't bother...

I kind of get what they're trying to do (by stretching my irony filter to the max) but it will not fly. When adblock morphs into adreplace 10 new apps that do the original thing would pop up inb less than a week.

That island is called 'Dokdo', which Japanese people are keep claiming that it's their territory. But it has been Korean territory for 10 centuries. Check this.

I like this idea as it will stop those really scammy adverts but isn't it kinda against the whole we don't like adverts premise as adverts need to grab attention to work... And if they don't clients just wouldn't bother...

But the purpose isn't to help users, or say the content creators on many sites, afaik these ads will direct revenue straight to the owners of adblock.

Before everyone freaks out, this is a good thing. Some things you should know.

1) AdBlock Plus is already allowing ads that qualify as "non-intrusive". They have been doing that for years.

2) This will hopefully mean that websites will finally get the memo that more intrusive ads means more adblock users. What websites should focus on is non-intrusive ads, and this helps with that.

3) You can still block all ads with AdBlock Plus if you want. They even have instructions on how to disable the "allow non-intrusive ads" feature on their website. Here are the instructions:

Quote

But I hate all ads!

No problem, you can disable this feature at any time:

  • Chrome, Maxthon, Opera, Safari - Click the Adblock Plus icon and select Options. Uncheck Allow some nonintrusive advertising.
  • Firefox - Click the Adblock Plus icon and select Filter preferences. Uncheck Allow some nonintrusive advertising.
  • Internet Explorer - Click the Adblock Plus icon and select Settings. Uncheck Allow some nonintrusive advertising.
  • Adblock Browser for Android - Open Settings, tap Ad blocking > Configure Acceptable Ads and uncheck Allow some nonintrusive advertising.
  • Adblock Browser for iOS - Open Settings, tap Adblock Plus > Acceptable Ads and uncheck Allow some nonintrusive ads.
  • Adblock Plus for iOS - Open Adblock Plus for iOS from the Home screen, tap the Settings icon > Acceptable Ads and uncheck Allow some nonintrusive ads.

4) The rules for "non-intrusive ads" are very strict and good. You can find the full list of criteria here but here are some things which are not allowed:

Quote
  • Ads that visibly load new ads if the Primary Content does not change
  • Ads with excessive or non user-initiated hover effects
  • Animated ads
  • Autoplay-sound or video ads
  • Expanding ads
  • Generally oversized image ads
  • Interstitial page ads
  • Overlay ads
  • Overlay in-video ads
  • Pop-ups
  • Pop-unders
  • Pre-roll video ads
  • Rich media ads (e.g. Flash ads, Shockwave ads, etc.)

On top of that, there are strict requirements for how big the ads are allowed to be, where they are allowed to be placed and so on.

great business strategy. elminate most ads on the internet, then start selling ad space.

something tells me the people who made adblock used to be a drug cartel.

Well perhaps for some they block ads just for the sake of not seeing ads, but personally, it's much more than that.  Some are highly disruptive to the flow of the webpage, some play sound without asking, some are large and are slow to download or waste your data (on mobile for example) and worst of all, some can contain viruses or links to them.  Even if they introduce "good ads", effectively failing the "first" purpose, they would still (in theory) be able to uphold the other benefits.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

but it replaces it with *its own* ads.

aka the website doesnt make money off their ads, ad"block" does.

in other words, adblock is once again putting one step closer towards being "vinnie" who will steal your money if you dont join his shady "protection" buisiness.

No no no no... That's not what is going on.

AdBlock won't intercept ads and replace them with their own. They are making a service that websites can choose to use instead of other ad providers such as AdWords.

So we are just getting more options.

1) Websites can keep using their current ad service and nothing will change.

2) Websites can choose to replace their current ad service with AdBlock's new one, and "non-intrusive ads" will be displayed on their website, and those ads will be displayed (by default at least) to AdBlock Plus users.

I have nothing against ads, I have everything against intrusive ads. Adblock is disabled on youtube for example.
