Mobile OS marketshare Q2 2016 results - Android marketshare increases while IOS and Windows Phone fall

In the course of 1 year, Android OS has gained a considerable amount of marketshare and is now on 82.6% of devices sold in 2016. IOS marketshare has dropped from 14.6% to 12.9% and Windows Phones have dropped from 2.5% to 0.6%.

 

The total amount gained on Android is 4% while IOS lost 1.7% and Windows Phone lost 1.9%. Blackberry OS devices also lost 0.2% and are now at 0.1%. Other devices have gone from 0.4% to 0.2%.

 

The data shows that more people are buying Android phones instead of IOS, Windows Phones, Blackberry and other devices.

Wake me up when Microsoft will advertise something from their phone.

I just hope that their big plan, is that once Redstone 2 is out, the "Surface Phone" will be released, and they'll activity push the OS and device.

I was joking, I'm more interested in seeing the end of iphone than windows phone honestly, though I would prefer android over either due to the selection of products (however I don't actually own a smart phone so my opinion is kinda meaningless)

This seems like their big plan but I have a feeling it won't go according to plan and something will mess up.

If the iPhone 7 has a lighting cable GG sales. Apple isn't afraid to use USB type C. As they have done in the past. But to standardize audio to USB type C would benefit everyone. Rather then lightning adapters everywhere and the opposite too

I think that apple knows this and doesn't really care, let me explain.

I believe that apple knows they aren't the bleeding edge of technology and aren't really making any real technology strides. Instead, they are a for-profit company and do most things for money. They know android has a bigger marker share but make enough money with the customer base that buys into the "apple ecosystem" that they don't care enough to try to reach to as many people as android can. #androidmasterrace

I really like android and I am not surprised it has 86% market share. Also note since this chart shows sales and not who usage I believe that Android would have a lower market usage share over iOS, a lot of my friends use used iPhones, and a lot of cheaper android phones would be used as disposable phones.

I kinda agree, but I think I'd get an iPhone before I'd get anything running Windows Phone. But I'll take Android thank you very much. I have a Galaxy S6.

Ideally keeping the head phone jack would be better, but if we must do away with headphones I agree USB-C on the iP7 would be better than Lightning if they do part with the headphone jack. But I'm sort of hoping the Moto Z proves that getting rid of the headphone jack is a extremely stupid idea.

 

I want a phone with better battery life, performance, compatibility and quality over thinness. I also sometimes will charge my phone and use the headphone jack.

 

Like I said above I have a Galaxy S6 and I think that is at perfect thickness and size, especially with having an Otterbox commuter on it.

The problem I have with USB type-C is that the cable is thick... headphones are thin and light. Also, if you have headphones connect in 'L' shape... on a normal headphone plug, it can rotate. Here if you want to rotate it, you need to unplug it, turn it 180 degree and plug it in. This reminds me... the cable can't turn on itself if its USB Type-C like it can on a headphone jack, won't that cause problems?

Agreed if they made a 6s with a 6000mah battery you wouldn't need a new phone for years. The NVME storage is just stupid fast, same with the fingerprint scanner. I don't know why Apple doesn't listen to people. We want thicker phones and bigger batteries

Not necessarily thicker or too much thicker. But making phones more efficient and having like 5000mAh batteries would be cool. Because then you could go maybe a few days without charging.

Or they spend some money in R&D and find a new battery technology that can be the same size or smaller the current LiPos and Lion batteries. But will last much much longer. Seriously if we had better batteries every problem could be fixed in the world

Apple sells you the user experience, which may or may not involve the latest technology. They don't include whatever the latest tech buzzword is just to tick off a spec sheet. 

 

And surprise, every company out there is by definition a profit-maximizing entity, be it Microsoft, Google, Samsung or Huawei or whoever is next to bear the ironic title of "iPhone killer". They aren't selling you cheaper smartphones out of the kindness of their hearts. They charge that price because that is what the market will bear, just as Apple is able to command such high prices for their imposes precisely because consumers have demonstrated that they are willing to pay that much for one. 

 

Think about it this way. Apple's record profits allows it to stay in business for a very long time and invest in new technologies and further strengthening its ecosystem. Which other company out there has the resources to maintain its own platform the same way Apple has? The richer Apple gets, the more resources they have to round out their ecosystem and have it more self-contained and sticky, which in turn draws more users to their platform, resulting in greater profits, perpetuating a virtuous development cycle. 

 

The downside of cheaper Android smartphones is that these companies are earning razor-thin margins, which doesn't leave them with much to invest in further improving their products and services beyond boosting hardware specs and / or lowering price, which is in itself a vicious downward spiral. 

 

I don't see the relevance or the significance of market share here when Apple continued to leads in every metric which matters. Lion's share of profits in the industry. Developers continue to release apps for iOS first or exclusively. The iOS App Store actually rakes in more revenue compared to Android. Google reportedly earns more from iOS than its own Android platform. 

 

It's not like this huge android market share is being commanded by any one single smartphone vendor, but is instead spread out amongst multiple smaller vendors. 

 

Is is it just me, or is profitless market share the only metric critics can use to paint the iPhone as anything but a roaring success?

I agree I'm just saying that apple knows that they don't have the majority of users, but they don't need to to be successful in their strategy

To be expected with the surge of budget priced phones that come with high end specs (coincidentally oppo, one plus, and huawei have all gone up, with only xiaomi losing .2 points)

The problem is that they need to show growth of any level.. this is what gets shareholder and investors, and this is important for a company growth, and how we measure value of a company in the business world, aside form sales and IP's.

It really depends on where you met your friends. I have been in a few schools, and the density of iPhone really varied on the general wealth of students. Android has more than half of phones in the world only because there are cheaper phones.

When you look even at Samsung offer, there is 500€ of price difference between the least expensive and the most expensive one. This has really made a difference in emergent markets. Recently there was a boom of phone sales in Russia, and cheaper android phones made their way up there.

 

 

On another note, I still don't get it why there are developers who still argue that they should code for iOS only. It doesn't make sense to me at all
