Startup Looks to Fix the Internet With New Router Technology

Officials with the Massachusetts startup, which came out of stealth mode this week, believe they have developed a fundamentally new approach to routing that that will reduce the complexity and improve the performance of networks, enabling them to address the changing demands of the modern world.

The Internet took off after the industry standardized on the TCP/IP stack 25 years ago, but there hasn't been much innovation done in routing since, Ory wrote, adding that "today's networks are built on the same fundamental protocols put in place decades ago before anyone could envision current demands, never mind what we need for the next few decades."

"Recent calls to reinvent the Internet—or start over—are increasing in frequency and volume," 128 Technology co-founder and CEO Andy Ory wrote in a blog post introducing the company. "There are big problems with the world's networks, but the suggested solutions available today are complex in their own right, and merely incremental.  The real challenge is that we need to transform the existing infrastructure from the inside WITHOUT discarding what's currently deployed."

That's where 128 Technology comes in. Company officials are proposing its Secure Vector Routing technology, which is a session-based networking solution that would enable routers to not only send traffic from the same session down the best paths, but also monitor and secure that traffic and give complete visibility to services and applications.

I dont know what else to add but to say that I agree. Todays demands, in a way, exceed the current infrastructure the internet was designed for. I am curious to see what these guys end up with in their final proposal and designs.

We can already see how much the internet sucks with colleges, labs, and banks. All with internet 2.0 with crazy speeds

I do think the Internet could use some revision as a whole. A lot of legacy stuff that doesn't make sense anymore or could be done better. But it's hard to replace something so large without huge costs and breaking stuff unless you enable legacy support at which point we end up like now where we've had ipv6 for decades but still use IPv4 (probably the most glaring case of legacy problems). 

 

I'm all for it but those who are to do it (or probably more accurately: those who will pay for it) will fight changes to the Internet especially fundamental ones because replacing so much equipment will be a bitch - both financially and logistically speaking.

I am trying to figure out what this company even does, but I can't.

Their entire website reads like candy fluff, but I can't find any meat or potatoes. It just goes "yeah all the existing things we use today? We can replace all of them and do it better", and then a bunch of buzzwords that doesn't mean anything.

 

They say they will submit it to standard bodies so it will be interesting to see when that happens (my guess is that it never happens, because this sounds like snake oil).

 

This sentence really rubs me the wrong way too:

Subnet masking is actually pretty straight-forward; it is merely a component for bit-wise operations relevant to the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

I doubt very much that America will let this happen, they still have critical systems running on machines from the 80s and switching off legacy protocols would render these systems useless.

Even if this company were making legitimate claims, it's unlikely we'll see major changes to networking within our lifetimes. IPv6 has been a thing for well over a decade, (even had professors hyping up IP address exhaustion) yet as far as the transition goes, we're nowhere closer than we were those 7 years ago when I went to college.

How about making networking protocols in such a way where everything is completely untraceable? From what I recall the Internet was built upon the assumption that everyone is a trusted network and was traceable.

The more I read on their website the angrier I get. I downloaded their shitty eBook (which requires you to input your email address, where you work, there you live, your name etc) and it doesn't explain anything. The first 7 pages are dedicated to explaining all the "problems" our current systems has, and the 8th page is their solution to it all. This is the entire text:

Okay... How will sessions, which we are already using a lot of (ever heard of this little protocol called "TCP"? It uses sessions) solve anything?

They don't mention anything about:

1) How will the routing work?

2) How will the security aspects work?

3) How will sessions solve anything that they have mentioned?

4) How will this make things more reliable?

5) How will this not add more complexity if it can also be integrated with existing technologies?

6) What will performance be like?

Not happening on America's watch though...

We already have that, and it's called Tor. The problem with making it "untracable" is that there must be a way of response traffic to find its way back to the sender. There must be a way to trace the traffic back.

Apparently I fell into the candy bowl on this one. I agree something need to improve... but these guys are just blowing out hot air and not giving out solid solutions.

Personally I just read that and I was done with this. Free, but a license fee based on the amount of data the customer sends through a "virtual router", ridiculous... Wouldn't be surprised if they were the ones who were in charge of this virtual router and had spying capabilities to see what you send and receive through it.
