Does Your Machine Make Sense?

I hope there's not another thread like this, point me to it if there is.

 

Anyway, I was just thinking about how my computer is a bit of an assemblage of things I tell people not to do. Now I'm curious, since "do as I say, not as I do" is such a common phrase, what about you guys?

 

Keep in mind that I'm not talking about mistakes or anything like that. This is for things that you knew were silly and did them anyway.

 

I'll start:

-I have a 950 Pro on a Z97 platform.

-I have a PhysX card.

-I have a 1kW PSU for a system that barely uses half that.

-My GPU's are mismatched.

-I have an intake fan on top.

- I have my OS on a RAID 0 setup, just because it looks good displaying more SSDs

- I have a 4K monitor I pretty much always have set to 1440p

- I literally cut out the 5.25" bays so my case has no resale value

- My PSU's warranty is void in multiple ways, but it looks nice

- My main storage is also on a RAID 0 setup, though in an external enclosure

- My top left monitor rests on top of the bottom left monitor, as the wall mount's swivel has partly given way

 

Pretty much all things I tell others not to do.

- Pulled one of the fan blade sets off my 290 (was rattling :c)

- 850W PSU for a 290 and HD 7970

- 4790 non K on an Asus Sabertooth Z97

My machine actually makes a lot of sense surprisingly. 

 

I have a 5820K @ 4.4GHz and 32GB of LPX because I use CAD almost every day.

 

My GPU is a GTX 780 SC ACX that's OC'd even farther. It performs on par with a stock GTX 970 and I paid $200 for it w/ warranty almost two years ago so...... Plus I don't do that much gaming these days but it's sufficient for 2560x1080 @ 75Hz. 

 

I'm still running a 256GB 850 Pro which is too slow and small now. 500+ MB/s just doesn't cut it anymore.

• 650 W PSU for a system that uses 350 - 400 W at best
• last-gen GPU paired with a I-really-don't-know-how-many-gernerations-old CPU
• locked CPU in a Z-chipset board
• 200W rated heatsink on a < 100 W CPU

It makes some sense. I do a lot of compute stuff with the idle power and I like to play games on ultra settings at 4K so the GPU's definitely make sense. The CPU is probably a tad overkill and I could have stepped it from a 5930K to a 5820K possibly but I didn't want to risk having no more PCIe lanes left, yes I need/use at least 28.

Here is mine

- Using an mITX motherboard in a full size ATX case

- r7 240 2GB Graphics card even though I do a lot of gaming

- Thermal probe on CPU even though an Athlon 5350 barely reaches body temperature.

- HDD mounted not on HDD mount but in a 3.25" expansion bay.

- Using a non-overclocking motherboard and then overclocking CPU by 50 mHz

 

My rig does not make sense.

- define R5 because it is a professional looking case that is not "boring" either.

- 4790k because i encounter a lot of ZIP archives and have my fair share of modded minecraft single threaded horribleness.

- 16GB ram, same story as before

- asus Z97 mk2 motherboard, this one may have been a bit of a splurge, but i went for this one mostly for "future-proofing" so i could do SLI/CF if i'd ever want to, and once i upgrade my main system to something more recent it'll gladly service as a secondary or home server build. i may one day experiment with using PWM fan headers for RGB leds

- my SSD/hard drive configuration made sense when i got it, then SSDs got much cheaper

- i splurged on my power supply (actually originally intended to splurge more) because of the SLI/CF thing, and because currently it is running 100% silent.

- GTX 970 strix, i'm happy with it. does what it needs to do, i very rarely use it at 100% gpu load.

- 

 

basicly, my system is built to always be more silent than the thing it is showing on display and trough speakers.

I wish my 3770k had vt-d... And my 600gb Velociraptor is due to die any day now... (I've been saying this for 4 years now... I've had it for 8) but other than that, my rig makes a lot of sense. I got the 730 SSD with the intention of grabbing another for RAID 0, but never did it. Still a solid SSD, but there were better choices at the time for single SSD's, even if it is a reliability beast.

- Having a X99 build: i7 5820k and 32GB Dominator Platinum RAM mainly used as gaming machine...

- Bought a GTX 970 instead of a GTX 980 because I had no more money left.

- Using a bay reservoir while I have plenty of room for a tube reservoir. (Corsair Graphite 780t)

Doesn't make any sense:

-ASRock B85 Killer board with a Xeon;

-Xeon E3-1220v3 scavenged from a Dell server, cooled by an H55 AIO (keeping it chilly);

-GTX 970 with a blower style cooler;

-Chieftec fullsize Bravo case from 2007, bought this year;

-SSD taped to the floppy bays;

-DVD writer in 2016;

-Will be paired with a traditional hi-fi setup via TOSLINK;

-Plasma TV as a monitor (1080p-60hz, at least).

Here are mine:

-Two monitors with an R7 360 (One of which is 1080p and the other... well... 1280x1024)

-I made a custom side windows because I kept my 15 year old case (That didn't have a window) and now all I really see are cables

-I covered one side of my PC in Hazard tape

-I made a custom fan mount in the side panel where my windows is

-I got rid of my storage bays just to get better cable management

-I have two HDD's and no SSD yet I still have a 2.5" HDD and a 3.5" HDD in my PC

-Stock cooler with an overclock-able chip

-Made my front panel from wood just to get better airflow (Rectangle holes in both sides of panel and 120mm fan)

-I only have one 120mm fan in my PC. The rest are 80mm

-two blue light strips and one red LED fan that make a nice purple colour together but don't really mix

 

The list could go on but I don't want to bore you.

I picked a cheap 500 watt power supply and a cheap motherboard for my computer, along with an i7 and GTX980.

Kids, don't do like I did; buy a power supply and a motherboard in a price range that's supposed to be capable of supporting components of that price range without catching fire. Luckily, my computer hasn't caught on fire. Yet.

-I got a case that didn't support AIO cooling , but i got it anyway ( but hey , it fits ! )

-my radiator fans are out of the case

- air goes through the top of my case and out the front ( i had to optimize airflow so the hot air from the 290x doesn't go to the radiator )

-i got a CX psu with a gpu that has a 300W+ TDP .

- I only have one case fan + radiator fans because my mobo only has 2 fan connectors and i didn't buy fan spliters yet , so i just leave the side panel open to vent air 

-i have ddr3 2400 ram that only runs at 1600 because i can't get it working at that speed .

- PC is hooked up to a 4k TV , but i only use 1080p because i only have 4k 30hz with hdmi .

Nope. It makes heat, whirring sounds of various volumes, and some impressive animations of my destroyer getting blown up.

 

Other than that, let's see:

• K chip in a Z mb - Check
• 390 paired to Skylake i5 (Refer to previous point) - Check
• Air-cooled CPU - couldn't get the H100i to fit, so, Check
• Graphics card longer than declared able to fit in a mITX case - Was fun, but nope, woulda done it differently.
• 2 Laptop ODDs in the ext 5.25" bay - Looks cool, but will only need the 2 when I decide to re-rip by CD collection.
