Full HoloLens Specs revealed - 64GB Storage, 2GB RAM and more

AlTech

Microsoft's HoloLens specs have been revealed by Windows Central. Windows Central took their review unit and have shared the full HoloLens specs with us.

I am quite shocked at a few things.

1. 2GB RAM - Really Microsoft? You couldn't put 4GB or 8GB?

2. The Windows 10 Version of it is 32 Bit.

hololens.PNG

WHAT! Microsoft! What is this? Why 2GB RAM? Why a 30fps camera? Why 64GB storage?

Well at least now we know not to expect this to be able to play games other than minecraft.

Seriously! What the hell!

Microsoft has been quiet on some of the exact hardware found in the HoloLens instead focusing on what you can do with it. Still, many may wonder what exactly is inside the $3,000 computer, so we decided to load up AIDA64 Mobile to see what we can find.

Surprisingly, none of the HoloLens hardware is completely out of this world regarding raw specs. Granted, Microsoft's custom coprocessor aka the HPU or Holographic Processing Unit is likely pulling some magic as it can reportedly process "terabytes" of information from all of the HoloLens sensors in real time.

Perhaps of interest is the Intel Atom processor, which is part of the Airmont family (and is Braswell, not Cherry Trail as initially reported by PC World). That processor runs as a ho-hum 1.04GHz, and while it is 64-bit capable, the OS itself is only 32-bit.

That leads to RAM of which there is only 2GB on board.

Storage on HoloLens is an ample 64GB although the user only gets around 54GB after the OS. I say it's sufficient because I have done a lot of photos, videos and app installations on the device including a few games and I still have 46GB available. Something like HoloTour is around 3.1 GB in size, but that is the exception so far, not the rule. Here are some other apps and sizes:

  • Galaxy Explorer Project - 139MB
  • Young Conker - 433MB
  • RoboRaid - 155MB
  • Fragments - 892 MB
  • Skype - 50MB
  • 3D Viewer - 23MB

Although to be fair, Microsoft can add an extra 2GB on launch of the final product and also ship it with a 64 Bit version.

Somewhat. It was designed to be able to play Minecraft and such. It wasn't meant for BF4 style games but at the same time, This is a damn potato. A $3000 damn potato.

It's not part of their plan. They want it fully wireless. No USB Cables or anything. Except charging. That's wired.

if you could run like steam on it, you could stream a game to it

I can stream GTA V to my £60 Atom based tablet and it runs great, no reason you couldnt stream a VR game over wifi

They don't want to stream it. IDK go ask Microsoft yourself.

Even for half the price it would still be too expensive. NASA however loves it and is currently using HoloLens to aid understanding of Mars surface before pushing rover forward.

I don't think we fully understand the product yet to be able to comment on pricing or what can it do. VR is a big thing but AR is even bigger. Problem is for now it is not too accurate and the lag can be seen by anyone. Sooner than later it will catch up and VR will look old school compared to it. So in a way M$ is heading the right direction.

This looks fairly decent to me, I'm personally highly interested in it's possible practical applications inside laboratory environments, AR is something that could vastly improve work processes in the lab.

if "video speed" hints to the recording speed of the camera it should be fine, adding a layer of AR to it would make it very useful when you are doing research projects, you could have the experiments protocol to the side of your view constantly, while recording all the steps you go through and adding labels/tags to objects to know what is inside the flask/bottle and if you still have to process it in a specialized matter.

Although this is also aimed at home usage(weather forecasts etc) I doubt if it catches on there. Since the current usage of it would be limited with only a single hololens in the household.

But in professional industries I can see some really nice applications for it.

This being a gen 1 product seems to have nice specs, of course you can't play games with it, that would be stupid for a productivity device(that's what it is according to me)

and like @ShadowCaptain said, just stream it, if there isn't a application/program for that then make it yourself, if I'm not mistaken this version is meant for developers after all.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

Yes you are. They have showed off Minecraft themselves. It's just that games is just a fraction of what they want to do with it.

I don't understand the hate.

It's a dev kit, so it makes sense the price-performance is absolutely crap.

Firstly those specs are probably far from the final specs, like it was with the oculus rift.

Dev kit 1 spec sucked, but the consumer version was awesome.

And the price is perfectly normal.

Again it's a DEV KIT, the price is at a range which makes it affordable for companies, but waaay to expensive for the average consumer.

Which is exacly what you want, you don't want consumers running around with something that's clearly not for them.

And it's a nice way for MS to get some money back from it's development cost, i can't imagine this was cheap for them.

This means nothing and we shouldn't care but whatever.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

The Oculus devkits cost less than a tenth as much though.

The problem here is that developers can't develop apps/games that require more powerful hardware than is in the devkit, because they wouldn't be able to test it. Whereas software for the Oculus devkits would just use PCs whose power was not dependent on the hardware in the devkit.

Yeah true but that was imo a mistake of oculus, there is a reason why they tried to avoid people selling DK2's.

But on the other hand it helped hype but whatever, still believe it was a mistake.

And i think for now it's more important the devs get familiar with HoloLens, it's not that imporant the graphics look good, getting it working properly is probably the biggest challenge for now.

It's not about looking good now, it's about being able to make what will look good in 2 or 3 years or whenever the consumer version arrives. They can't really use the current devkit to work on that, since the hardware is so weak.
