'Cortana' Microsoft's next-generation personal assistant

Gunzkewl

Microsoft is currently testing and readying its Windows Phone 8.1 update that is believed to include a new personal assistant. ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley reports that the Siri-like feature, codenamed Cortana after the Halo character, will let Windows Phone users interact with a handset through voice commands. Windows Phone already includes basic voice commands, but Cortana looks to be a step further with a system that will learn and adapt.

Steve Ballmer has promised a "service-enabled shell" for Microsoft's devices, and Foley claims Cortana is central to this new shell for Windows Phone, Windows, and Xbox One. It's not clear exactly how Cortana will work on Windows Phone, but screenshots of Windows Phone 8.1 earlier this year revealed that Microsoft is already testing the technology.

The software will likely ship with Windows Phone 8.1, an update that's also set to include a notification center and several UI changes.

I don't use voice assistant at all since sometimes it a lot takes longer, but I just hope they really name it Cortana and has her voice.

Awesome... still don't care about voice assistants, especially since I doubt this will hold a candle to Google's.

if it adapts and learns its better than Google Now that can only give basic info and set a few settings its not really a Siri alternative.

Can't wait to have Cortana on my phone. Hopefully you can give yourself a name. I would have mine as Chief.

Learnibg is a characteristic of living things. It acquires ne information and equations. Just like computers cannot think. They can only process data and probability based on what we give it.

Google Now does not talk to you like a person would Siri and I have to say it S Voice do they will try and answer questions without searching google or the web

Well,Siri is using Bing too so i guess no suing is in order. Please let Cortana have the ability to do 'small talks' and be well integrated with the WP8 ecosystem.

I hope this is not another major update coz after the amber update,my phone barely has anymore space, even with no games and minimal apps installed.they should fix the WP8 system memory allocation first.

I also really hope that in the next update they add a file browser and store music on SkyDrive with the ability to stream that music to the user.

I don't really care about my phone having a personality and telling me how much it hates Apple or Microsoft products and how Google is the best, I care more about functionality and efficiency which Google Now delivers way better than both of those and it's improving at a far greater rate.

I guess some people would disagree but going with the personality route just means the feature will be used a few times for fun until the novelty wears off.

Voice recognition software has improved quite a bit but I still feel like I have to modify my voice sometimes for it to pick up the information that I want it to.
