WD Red 4TB GIVEAWAY!

LinusTech

I'm in the process of building my first PC and right now I have a Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB SSD and a Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB 7200RPM Hard Drive.

For my first build I really wanted to go as all out as I could while still staying within my budget of $3,000. This build is both for High end gaming and video editing. I wanted my windows to be able to boot up fast as well as a game or two of my choosing to be run from the SSD, Then be able to store most of my editing and movies on my hard drive. My goal is to get a few more hard drives to run in an appropriate RAID configuration as I will be doing a lot of editing with this rig and will need all of the space I can get. I feel pretty confident in my build so far but What I really need is more storage!

Desktop:

Crucial M4 128GB SSD

Samsung F3 1TB

Samsung F4 2TB

My old SSD (Corsair F60) was too small for my desktop so I upgraded to an M4 when they were released. After getting used to an SSD as a boot drive I can't go back to a mechanical HDD, they are simply too slow. The F3 used to be my boot drive back when SSDs were still really expensive and 100GB was considered very big. I got the F4 when I needed more storage.

When my F3 and F4 were full I decided to get a NAS and got this:

NAS:
Four 2TB Seagate Barracuda

I really like my NAS but I would gladly swap out some of the 2TB drives for some 3TB WD Red drives since you know, my current drives aren't really rated for NAS usage.

Running a 120GB samsung EVO ssd to have fast boot time and load certant games like BF3 faster and it was the cheapest SSD I could find by a brand that I heard of. Also running a WD 1tb Caviar Blue for storage because of its size and price.

Current build

MSI Z87 Mpower motherboard, Intel I5-4670K, Noctua NH-D14, MSI gtx760 Hawk, 4Gb x 2 Crucial Ballistix Sport, 120Gb Samsung 840 Evo, 1Tb WD Caviar Blue, 750W EVGA supernova, Fractal Design Define R4.

I'm running:

-a 240 GB Corsair Force 3 SSD for windows and programs,

-a 120 GB Force 3 SSD for my office-documents and music,

-a 1TB Samsung HDD for games and movies.

-a 240GB Crucial M500 in the mail (because it was on sale and I buy a lot of things I don't really need when they are on sale)

Also, I have alot of WD external drives:

2x 2TB WD Elements for redundant Backups

1x 1TB WD My Book that was thought as an external Steam drive, but now is a media drive

1x 500GB WD Elements Portable for portalbe Storage. (also used on my mobile with the MobileLite Wireless)

All these external drives were bought second hand. (As I was saying, I cannot stop buying stuff that is very good and cheap)

I just built my P.C. about 1 or 2 weeks ago, I have a Samsung 840 Pro 120 GB as my OS, Boot ( because it's fast ), and some storage. I ran out of it while downloading games that I got from Humble Bundle and now I have no storage :) . I'm trying to figure out how to wipe the WD My Book External Hard Drive I have so I can use some of that until I get a 1 TB hard drive or a 4 TB :) .

I've got a big stack of external drives, one 2x1TB RAID (JBOD since the power button started flaking), three 2TB and one 1.5TB HDD all in separate enclosures.

My ancient MBP has a 256GB Samsung 830 in it, and so too does my PC tower, but that is complimented by a couple of older 500GB drives.

Simply put, it's like this because I haven't got around to sorting it out yet! A good RAID enclosure or Drobo is really pricey, and either way, I'd need to find a good way (and a good bit of time) to properly catalogue and shuffle all of my data around to fit.

To do that, I'd probably need to buy more HDDs, or win this competition! (Nudge Nudge, Wink Wink)

I'm running a Samsung 840 Pro 128 GB SSD at the moment and am going to buy a WD Black 1TB soon.

The samsung is for my copy of Windows and the games I play the most and the HDD would be for my video work, games I don't play much etc...

I might get a couple of cheap SSDs and stick them in RAID 0 to move the OS to and some more games and then back them up with a Red or Blue and then use the 840 Pro as cache for the HDDs them up.

I use a 1tb WD My Book external hard drive because I use a laptop and it has enough space to store my pictures, data and downloads.

Hey Linus,

I'm using a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB as my main hard drive, I use this mainly to keep all my movies, games, and TV series. I got it for a cheap price from amazon for around £80 which was a year ago. It has a 6gbps data transfer which is awesome as it gets the job done fast when opening files. I also run 128GB SSD which stores my OS to make it startup faster. The hard drive is getting filled up really fast and would love to expand but don't have a job in order to buy a new one. Thanks!

1. I don't have a desktop, but I will be getting one pretty soon. I now run a 320Gb HDD in my Laptop and a 2 Tb external drive for backups and my media (movies, music, etc.) I run this because the external hard drive was cheap and good quality and the internal one just came with my laptop and I never needed to upgrade it.

I have a 60gb  ocz vertex 2 drive i used to have 2 of them in raid 0 but first 1 off the drives failed and i returned it and got a new one and then the second one failed and i have no waranty on it and then my raid chipp also failed on the motherboard so now i only have a 60gb ocz vertex 2 i got 2 of them at first because it was the same price as a 120gb when i bought it and and 2 in raid0 would be faster and i also have a western digital 500gb black for storage because 60gb wont let me save much data and only my steam libary is 150gb and and my 500 gb is full now so i would probably need more storage. im using the ssd for os only and the games i play the most now for faster loading times.

I run a 250GB samsung SSD 840 as a boot drive, important programs (like firefox, office etc.) and some good games (BF3) so that I get the best performance, and save my files, other programs and games to a 500GB WD blue drive where speed isn't as important. I don't need massive capacities, although my SSD is as full as I'd like it to be, so 500GB seemed like a good idea at the time. However, since then I've bought loads of new games (damn you steam summer sale!) so I will need to upgrade at some point.

I have a 120GB Boot SSD and a 640GB WD Blue as my games storage drive and its nearly full. my external storage is a old 200Gb Seagate drive that is again almost full. The only drive i really care for is my 640GB and my SSD but I wish I could run a nice raid setup for my games and media storage. The reason why i run this storage configuration is because I'm broke and these are the drive I just happened to get a hold of.

I'm just using a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB for the time being since the speed is a very nice improvement. Only using ~1/3 for the time being but would appreciate 4TB more for video creation.

1. I run an ADATA S599 SSD that I bought when SSDs first came out (so I paid like $300 for a 60GB) for my OS and I've never looked back. I also run a 1TB WD Blue drive for applications and storage. I would like to upgrade to some 840 EVOs but there are older parts that need replacing first.

1x entry - Post about your storage setup in this thread.
I currently have a Corsair 180GB boot SSD along with 2 x 1TB (blue + black) WD HDDs for storage, for backup I have a 2TB green via eSata. For my NAS I have two 3TB Greens (non-raided mirror backups). I chose this setup to reduce the number of drives in my gaming system (space/noise/heat), and 0% chance of total file loss (eg: virus / corruption, raid 1 doesn't help!). 4TB reds would be a perfect update :)

Hi all!

I'm running SSD + HDD as SSD caching with Samsung's 830 64GB and 3TB WD Red, and loving it for everything I do!

Mainly for gaming, and for other reasons too, as live streaming professionaly, as you can read my set-up here: http://www.reddit.com/r/videography/comments/1izm8e/esl_experience_lan_croatia_event_live_streaming/

Also for video editing and audio editing, must have setup!

With this set-up I also have 3 other WD HDDs, one 1.5TB external connected with eSata, second 1TB USB 3.0 external, and third 640GB internal, and also Samsung's Spinpoint F1 500GB internal.

And still, I'm having problems with my storage, recording videos from live streaming, and video editing takes alot of space.

In future I was thinking of making a NAS with 3 or more 3-4TB HDDs.

Sadly that my set-up doesn't have bigger SSD so I can run OS just from it. :)

That's it from me :)

My first build that i'm building will have a 1 TB WD Green drive that I salvaged out of a WD External and i'm gonna buy a Mushkin Chronos 480 GB because it's the best price for that capacity. I will put the OS and Programs on the SSD and I will dynamic link the 'Users' folder in the SSD and have it in my HDD, also planing on using the SSD for cache, also planing on adding another 1TB WD Green later on and putting the two HDD's into RAID 1.

My storage setup includes Plextor PX-128M5S, WD WD10EARS, WD My Passport 2TB and 4x Kingston KVR16N11/8.

PX-128M5S is my boot drive because it's fast.

WD10EARS is my storage drive because it's more reliable than SSD.

My Passport is my backup drive because it's used to yearly backup the data from WD10EARS and store porns!

KVR16N11/8 is my RAM disk because it's used to play games and serve as a temp folder in order to protect the PX-128M5S.

If I win, I will replace my WD10EARS with the WD Red... HeeHee!

I'm using a Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB because in the past it was cheap and fast and I haven't the money to always buy new hard drives.
