I won a 980Ti. What should I do with it?

2. My vote goes to the ultrawide

Hi!

So I won a PNY XLR8 GTX 980Ti OC from Nvidia's Christmas giveaway here in the UK, (with this post) which I'm still struggling to come to terms with, it's absolutely the craziest thing.

But, my gaming setup still uses 1080p monitors (1x32in as main display and 1x22in as a secondary). So, I thought to do the new GPU justice, I should upgrade displays, cause using a 980Ti for 1080p feels like I'm using a Bugatti to drive down the street to the corner shop.

I was thinking a 3440x1440 Ultrawide display like the LG 34UM95 or the curved variant, the 34UC97. Or should I go for a 4k monitor? Or just a less fancy 2560x1440/1600 monitor? What's your guys thoughts?

Relevant System Specs: CPU: i5 4670k

MBoard: Asus Z87 Sabertooth

CPU Cooler: Enermax ETS-T40

RAM: 10GB DDR3 1600MHz

GPU: well... the 980Ti

PSU: Corsair RM650

Thanks in advance for any comments/input :)

2560x1440 monitor with all the bells and whistles.

Ultrawide and gaming seem to be a headache most of the time thanks to HUD placement.

Grab the ultrawide. If you want to max out games at 4k, 60FPS, you'll need two 980 Tis.

Then again, a 980 Ti is overkill for standard 16:9 1440p. It'll still max stuff out at 1440p Ultrawide, but will actually be utilized to a greater extent.

I think 1440p tbh as you will keep the FPS just ticking over. Also, what was your old GPU? Just curious.

Contrary to what a lot of people think and will tell other people, no your 980 Ti is not "overkill" for 1080p, so long as you're actually playing games that push it.

To explain this further, with a 980 Ti, you will not experience near as many frame drops as other cards and you will just have a smoother experience overall. To some, that means "overkill". To me, that just means whoever has a 980 Ti with a good 1080p display will have a better experience than someone with a 980 or something similar.

If you feel like getting a 1440p monitor, I would do that. 4k? No. Not even a 980 Ti would make a great 4k experience for modern games.

1440p 144hz monitor would be top choice, ultra wide is..... eh.... as others have stated HUD placement, games supporting it correctly, just a hassle.

Not if it breaks the terms of the game, look at Planetside 2.

Not to mention most games don't support mods and you could get banned for even a HUD replacement mod.

Yeah most people seem to advise against going for 4k. Just as long as a single 980Ti will handle 3440x1440... which I hope it will... haha
