Yeah good luck blocking VPN's. If you do, people will just cancel their Netflix subs and start pirating again.

If all of our content were globally available, there wouldn’t be a reason for members to use proxies or “unblockers” to fool our systems into thinking they’re in a different country than they’re actually in. We are making progress in licensing content across the world and, as of last week, now offer the Netflix service in 190 countries, but we have a ways to go before we can offer people the same films and TV series everywhere.

Over time, we anticipate being able to do so. For now, given the historic practice of licensing content by geographic territories, the TV shows and movies we offer differ, to varying degrees, by territory. In the meantime, we will continue to respect and enforce content licensing by geographic location.

Some members use proxies or “unblockers” to access titles available outside their territory. To address this, we employ the same or similar measures other firms do. This technology continues to evolve and we are evolving with it. That means in coming weeks, those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are. We are confident this change won’t impact members not using proxies.

We look forward to offering all of our content everywhere and to consumers being able to enjoy all of Netflix without using a proxy. That’s the goal we will keep pushing towards.

this is the main reason why I won't sub to NetFlix; here is Romania, the accessible content is quite limited compared to the US content

They can do like what Microsoft did with Zune Music Pass. For a while back, the Zune was sold in Canada, but didn't have the music subscription service. So some Canadians where access the U.S via VPN to access the subscription service and subscribed.

What Microsoft did (probably due to pressure of the music industry) is to lock you into the region you are based on the credit card billing information. So in order to access the music subscription service, you need a U.S Credit card.

Netflix can do something similar. So that means even if you travel to the U.S, you'll get content from where the credit card is registered to.

The real question is: why the HELL isn't the content the same all over the world? You don't see steam locking out games in a country unless the government there tells them to.

 

because movies are much more likely to use licenses for music and other legal bullcrap that differs from country to country, so they can't just throw it at any country.

I'm surprised it took them so long. And i am surprised people still are shocked that Netflix cant service all licenses across all networks in the world.

 

Don't complain to them, bitch at the shitty media companies that hold basically global monopolies and stop it from happening.

Indeed, Netflix basically has a smoking gun held up to their head. They have very little choice in the matter, since they don't have very much leverage to use against the license holders. If Netflix says "Fuck you, we want to show it everywhere", then Disney will be like "Welp. We just revoked your license for all Disney, Marvel, and Lucasfilm content. Good luck!"

 

The big studios want the old system, where they can farm out a license 30 times to 30 different regions, and then also to Cable providers for big bucks.

 

It took a few years for content in Canada to be.. say.. interesting to some level.

For a long while Netflix Canada only had a few aged old crappy (like really bad) movies, and kids shows.

Now it actually has a nice movie selection. But nothing near U.S.

Indeed, Canadian Netflix doesn't suck anymore - I have a VPN service, but often I don't even turn it on unless I specifically look for something that's missing - but the US Netflix catalogue is still far superior. At least Canadian Netflix has a decent selection now though.

 

Different companies have different rights to distribute different movies in different countries. It's all about the licensing.

 

In Romania , for example , another online streaming service has the rights to distribute House of Cards , so there isn't any House of Cards on Netflix here.

That's kind of hilarious, given that it's a Netflix Original series. Does it still have the "Netflix" branding in the credits of each episode?

They can't because the industry continues to use an old and outdated system. The industry needs to modernize ASAP, with global licenses for online media - especially for TV and Movies.

they are already available in physical format, the only reason they aren't available digitally is what @dalekphalm said, they just want to milk all regions separately. What they fail to realize is that people who can't get it on netflix most likely won't buy it in blu ray for 30 bucks a pop (seriously wtf, a blu ray disc is 50 cents) but will pirate it.

How can they tell you use a VPN and where you are from if VPNs are the greatest thing ever and you can't see past them. I was right people VPN's are just chinease companies farming login information and selling it

How can they tell you use a VPN and where you are from if VPNs are the greatest thing ever and you can't see past them. I was right people VPN's are just chinease companies farming login information and selling it

They will start by banning the major VPN IP Addresses. A VPN service like Tunnelbear or Hotspot doesn't give you a unique IP Address - they probably have dozens or even hundreds of other users using the same IP.

 

One possible solution is for VPN Services to start acquiring large (I mean gigantic) batches of IPv6 addresses - and just cycling them every time Netflix bans it - or even doing a one-off disposable IPv6 address - but that would probably really increase the cost of VPN services.

 

They could also look at a few indicators:

1. How many users are using that IP? How many are concurrent (eg: 17 people using the same IP but with various logins) - these types of things will set off a red flag for them to do further investigations

2. Is the IP coming from your CC Billing Address (Eg: Canadian CC, but a US IP)

3. They may have developed some technology that can detect a VPN connection - they might not be able to snoop the data transmitted, but they might be able to tell that you are using VPN protocols.

Number 1 can be considered but will trigger all the public places like university and what not...

 

First time I hear about the technology allowing them to know about the VPN. I don't doubt it exist but I'm wondering how it works.

The real question is: why the HELL isn't the content the same all over the world? You don't see steam locking out games in a country unless the government there tells them to.

Canadian media sources must be 60% Canadian media or more, hence less us based selection

If I explained it in a reasonable format, this would be way too long.

 

However, the movie industry is far more pushy about this. Especially with companies like Viacom serving some content in one area due to copyright reasons and serving other content in another area due to deals set up with different companies (ex. Viacom's deal with Amazon which brought MTV Networks' catalog of shows to Prime).

Australia's Netflix library is pretty damn tiny compared to the US one, i doubt i'll keep my subscription going if they geo-block me. Don't get me wrong i love Netflix (US version) but the Australian one just doesn't have enough content to keep me interested for much more than 1-2 months out of a whole year.

 

I guess i'll go back to other means of accessing content, something i had stopped doing doing since getting Netflix+UnblockUS.

When Netflix came to Australia there was a sharp dip in piracy, i would bet my life that when Netflix start geo-blocking us Australian Netflix subscriptions will take a dive and downloading will rise again. I think that Netflix is well aware of this but they need to be seen as doing everything they can to stop us accessing content from other countries.

Not exactly sure how they are going to kill off VPN connections, like the proper ones, but they could kill of the cheap ones. In the end, means less money for them.

 

Also pretty sure they announced that they were going to do this months ago? Or were they looking into it back then?
