this raises the question.

soudn't you guys be doing a save on the server and simultaneously saving to the computer its being worked on ? that way you have a copy on the server and on your pc. so if one of them fails, then not only you can keep working. but you don't get to loose all of your current work.

No, this raises the issue of version control and data duplication. One of the main reasons data storage is centralised is not only to make sharing easier and ensure that the data being accessed won't have conflicting changes, but to centralise backups as well. This makes backing up much easier and quicker, but obviously you must have the correct backup infrastructure set up and running in production, which in the case of LMG, was still a work-in-progress.

 

Imagine if you ran a business with 100 employees, and all of them saved to their own computers as well as multiple servers! Not only would the workflow be tedious and frustrating, but it'd also end up being a mess after a little while.

OMG, I think it wasnt just a roller coaster for Linus but it was a roller coaster for me too! It felt good to see his face light up when everything was working properly again. Phew!

its all about ur servers or projects that seem pointless like cheap 8 cores systems or 7 games 1 pc

seems like the topgear of the PC world

For anyone wondering how much that recovery service costs, I just checked their site and it says that the remote recovery service starts at $3000 USD.

That is a lot less then how much the video was worth

That was suspenseful. I've lost a whole ton of work from a hard drive (which was faulty from day 1, according to the engineers) and forked out over £150 on recovery (I even had to purchase the drive to leave the store- something I was not told beforehand) and I received a quote from another data recovery service starting at about £200 for my issue and drive capacity. I now wish that they got back to me earlier and to go ahead with their recovery. I also noticed that the drive in my server was failing (6 years old, WD Blue 640GB), but luckily managed to pull off all the files I needed before the number of bad sectors increased (thanks IT Services!). For those who ask why I didn't backup: I have very little free time outside of school and a drive with nowhere near enough space for 2TB of data, so I only have a backup from August and nothing since.

Anyway, good to see that WeRecoverData got your data back.

For anyone wondering how much that recovery service costs, I just checked their site and it says that the remote recovery service starts at $3000 USD.

a few thousand dollars sound quite fair for saving probably more than a month worth of effort of the team

 

btw I thought Linus said the super fast ssd server has hourly backups...

stripping across three RAID volumes sounds very dangerous to me

When he made that video, that was his plan, but until recently he had not setup a server for it to backup to. 

Nothing wrong with nesting raid levels. It worked quite well until until something messed up the motherboard.(causing one of the controllers to fail with it)

Video was fun to watch but should definitely show why there are enterprise solutions out there supported by large 24/7 tech teams. I realize no one would watch LMG videos if he said something like "Having consultant set up Nimble Array!" and I won't bash him for that but putting all your mission critical data on these home built servers is sort of scary.

 

One more comment I have is that for some of us in IT already it'd be neat to have more technical information on what you're running. We get a glimpse but not really any big details.

yeah. but idk how they didn't use it ? I mean. unless they work with the data on the server. wich. well its not the best idea (unless you have an overkill one like theirs) considering you don't have a copy on your machine.

I maybe wasn't paying close enough attention...but was it just the motherboard that died?   Video made it seem like all he had to do was plug everything in to a new system and it started working again.

 

Also, re: thread, "offsite" backups are just in case of fire or some physical destruction of the building, which is highly unlikely scenario.  The key point is to just have *any* backup.  Storage Server gets pushed to the cloud and I keep cold storage snapshots on hard drives on my shelf.
