So I was with my mum at the store yesterday, she told me that my lil' bro needed a new charging cable for his 5S. Now the rest of my family has iPhones (literally all of them) and I have a Windows Phone. So I didn't know this until yesterday.

 

How the fuck can Apple capitalize on FUCKING CHARGING CABLES and people be okay with it? I showed my mom a charging cable and she said 'No it will not be certified and won't charge'. I was like, 'What? How can Apple tell what charging cable you have?'. Apparently Apple made 'certified cables' and if you have the wrong cable, it will give you an error telling you it's not certified and it won't chaarge until you spend $10+ on a certified cable. My mom tells me this and I think it's stupid, and she tells me a lot of the charging cables she buys aren't 'certified'.

 

No one is questioning this? My parents have spent like hundreds of dollars on charging cables and return half of them because Apple won't let it charge your iPhone. What kind of bullshit is this? I knew Apple was already low, but this is a whole different level. I kind of wanted a 6S just because of how powerful it was but now I KNOW I'm never, ever buying an Apple product.

 

Someone please tell me it's because the cable isn't thick enough to transfer the current needed or something, because I am seriously doubting Apple would do this.

It's true, some cables aren't 'MFi' certified and does give you an error and it doesn't charge the phone....

Apple certifies cables that it's willing to guarantee will work and not damage the phone. Alternatively, you can take your chances with a non certified cable and hope that the cable is made decently. So I stand by Apple's policy as non-certified cables can damage the phone which would upset customers and cause Apple to have to repair more phones. 

 

But not all certified cables are overpriced. I use Monoprice cables that are $7 for a 6' cable and they work fine.

What current, apple phones charge at 5v 1a as far as I know, there is no current there. That's why it takes 150 minutes to charge iPhone 6s with it's amazing 1715mAh battery

My whole fucking family has iDevices and we aren't that dumb. Hell, my mom had a third party charger.

I still have the original charger to my iPod touch and a third party charger I got for my old iPhone 4.

i have used plenty on non certified cables to charge my phone and they work just fine. all the certification means is apple has reviewed the cable. also this error comes up alot usually some dust or something obstructing the cable http://osxdaily.com/2015/02/12/cable-is-not-certified-error-message-iphone-ipad/

No, brand new cable. Not broken. You plug it in, it rejects it telling you it's not certified and it won't charge the phone. You can't do anything about it and it's not on a single phone, it does it for all of the iPhones and iPads in the house.

Never once have I even ran into that issue, nor do I know anyone who has. Most lightning cables work just fine.

Some don't have balancing chips in them and may short the battery. That is the reason the Apple one is so expensive. I bought a lightning cable to USB and you can you a mouse on your iPhone wicked cool if you ask me

But they're brand new cables and they're from brands like Polaroid or Duracell or something. How are they not certified to work? All it does is transfer current from the adapter to the phone, there's nothing else to it!

Look up the recent USB-C debacle. There's plenty of possibility for the cable to damage the phone.
