Some don't have balancing chips in them and may short the battery. That is the reason the Apple one is so expensive. I bought a lightning cable to USB and you can you a mouse on your iPhone wicked cool if you ask me

You mean voltage regulators? I know how these things work, it's just a rectifier, some capacitors to get the charge going, and a 5V regulator to keep the power clean. The cable literally does nothing but connects the phone and rectifier together.

But they're brand new cables and they're from brands like Polaroid or Duracell or something. How are they not certified to work? All it does is transfer current from the adapter to the phone, there's nothing else to it!

OP, your situation is a bit like my Nexus 6P. apparently there's some USB-C cables that don't deliver full specs of an actual USB-C architecture. luckily there's a Google engineer that hunts down mismatch USB-C cables and writes a review so you can avoid buying them. usb-a to usb-c cables have the same issue. 

 

usb-c chargers do the same thing. reading a bit over xda says that the 6P can't deliver fast charging unless the cable is usb-c at both ends and that the charger supports 2 or 3A. i have a usb-a to usb-c cable (runs full usb-c specs) and then tested it with my 3A charger I have that's also quickcharge 2.0 capable (i use this charger for my G3 and it charges rapidly). the 6P charges slowly. using an app called Ampere it seems that the amount of amps taken is much lower than Huawei's charger that came in the box with the 6P. sadly the 6P doesn't support quickcharge either so it can't take advantage of my QC 2.0-capable charger 

 

such is the life of owning a 6P...

Funnily enough, a friend got a Xiomi phone with the same specs as my Lumia 630 - hers is a lot slower for some reason. Mine just does shit like load web pages and open apps a lot faster. Not to mention I have no memory issues even though I only have 512MB whereas hers will crash certain apps due to memory shortage :D

I just really want the 950 XL. People say it's useless because of the OS but people don't know how to use it is all.

Why not make a flimsy ass connector then? After years of experience from making phones, no one can make a stupid connector that will last and is easy to construct.

read my revised post and the article. also the lighting cable is much more durable than apples old 30pin and micro usb. the only reason they really break is because the connection from the actual cable part to the part that is plugged in isn't reinforced. also this isn't just apples problem most oem cables tend to break in that area

eh, i still like the 6P in spite of its faults that i've observed in the length of time i've owned it. in fact i had to RMA my 6P because the first one had a display defect.. fortunately Google honored my woes and quickly dispatched a new 6P. and yes, the new one is free of defects. so basically i had the 6P since the first pre-order windows in the Google store.

Well if my $1000 6s needed a new charging cable I'm sure as shit going to buy a certified one. There are ones on amazon that are tougher and cheaper. Like the anker one I saw. Or you could take care of your cables. The one that came with my 5s still works and that one is almost 2 years old, it just has a turtleneck. I'm only using the one that came with my 6s cause i don't want to use the old one anymore.

What current, apple phones charge at 5v 1a as far as I know, there is no current there. That's why it takes 150 minutes to charge iPhone 6s with it's amazing 1715mAh battery

In college I worked at Best Buy and 9/10 people that came in looking for lightening cables mentioned how their relatively new apple cable broke after a couple weeks/months and they needed a replacement. I would try to sell people 3rd parties ones but they said the same thing your mom said. Even when I showed them certified cables they kept asking for Apple Branded despite the high price difference.

 

It's just apple being apple. 

 

P.S. - also dealt with a couple people who returned name brand 3rd party cables (a lot of Belkin cables) that were listed as certified because they got the not supported error.

Am I just too gentle with my cables or is everyone pulling their cables out by the wire and not the plug? my cable is 2 years old and it still works.

Implying that literally every manufacturer isn't guilty of the same thing. At least Apple doesn't use the even more fragile Micro USB connector.

People are just idiots. I've been using the same micro usb cable for the last 5 years, 30-pin cable for the last 5 years (well, I used it for 5 years until I stopped using my ipod two years ago), and my lightning cable for the past 3 years. 

 

You really have to be pretty aggressive/negligent to manage to break these cables.

No, brand new cable. Not broken. You plug it in, it rejects it telling you it's not certified and it won't charge the phone. You can't do anything about it and it's not on a single phone, it does it for all of the iPhones and iPads in the house.

Okay I get it, I thought your family had returned cables from Apple because they didn't charge the phone. But I guess they were third party ones. My bad.

Implying that literally every manufacturer isn't guilty of the same thing. At least Apple doesn't use the even more fragile Micro USB connector.

 

People are just idiots. I've been using the same micro usb cable for the last 5 years, 30-pin cable for the last 5 years (well, I used it for 5 years until I stopped using my ipod two years ago), and my lightning cable for the past 3 years. 

 

You really have to be pretty aggressive/negligent to manage to break these cables. 

that's what I thought.

Am I just too gentle with my cables or is everyone pulling their cables out by the wire and not the plug? my cable is 2 years old and it still works.

 

I never broke a charging cable before. Did brake an adapter but that was probably because of the traveling and power differences (it was a US plug w/ 2 travel adapters :P) charger eventually got fried...

 

I don't use apple products besides my Nano. It was the 30 pin one that came with the 1st gen with a lightening cable adapter for the newest gen nano. So 5+ year old cable working fine. But I compared it with my sis's iphone 6 cable and the thickness reduced and overall it feels cheaper so who knows.
