This is old news, and the article is not strictly accurate. Here is an article about the same news from two years ago (Jan 2014), which explains it much better and more truthfully: http://resources.infosecinstitute.com/close-look-nsa-monitor-catalog-server-hacking/

Notably:

  • It only affects a few specific models of server from OEMs
  • It requires physical access to the server, to flash the BIOS and install the vulnerability
  • It probably wouldn't work on newer servers due to additional security features of modern motherboards

There are other concerns of course, many of them more realistic, but I hope that we can get past the "why should I care" argument.

My main reason to care is that the more the government is allowed to ignore the bill of rights the more they will do so, and I really like the bill of rights.

 

Aka I agree those people are dumb.

 

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

There was a great documentary on Kim dotcom and all ISPs know over 50% of all traffic is pirated but they just do nothing. The only reason you here people that get caught is they randomly pick someone every so often to try and scare others not to.

It does not matter how you sugar coat it, Snowden is no less guilty of espionage than any other individual caught stealing/disclosing controlled or classified information. With a security clearance you have an underlying duty to safeguard information that unauthorized disclosure could reasonably be expected to cause damage, serious, or exceptionally grave damage to the national security. His actions are no different than if he sold/gave the information to another country's government vice releasing it to journalists. If that had happened, I doubt we would be having this discussion now.

Take for example, the recent sentencing of an individual who was caught trying to provide sensitive information about the new Ford Class aircraft carrier to the Egyptian government. Same act of espionage, just a different receiver of the information. Yet somehow Snowden is painted in a completely different light by some whereas I don't think the same people would think it was ok for the other individual to provide sensitive information to the Egyptians.

As far as "GODSURGE" is concerned: The existence of different tools and cyber-weapons used by intelligence agencies does not instantly mean they are being used widespread on individuals.

Comparing leaking military data to Egyptians to leaking a clear breach of the US 4th amendment and privacy is a false analogy.

Well it's certainly possible for your BIOS and UEFI to be used for spying but I think this claim goes a bit too far for me to just blindly believe. My guess is that some of it is true but that the website haktuts are adding in a bunch of assumptions and/or conspiracy theories.

I don't see any citation that leads to Snowden so it's hard to verify what they are saying.

If this is true then Microsoft are in on it seeing as Secure Boot is literally designed to prevent your boatloader from being modified by the OS.

As in, the information they are collecting is being stored in devices that are connected to the motherboard? That has to be some impressive software if it can scan for devices, dictate where information goes, and know where to send which pieces of information without fragmenting them across several difference devices (and being able to piece it back together in a comprehensible order for them to be able to figure out what you did, when you did it, and where you did it). 

 

Oh well. AMI Flash everything. If the NSA's software can survive through that, they clearly deserve my information.

There was a great documentary on Kim dotcom and all ISPs know over 50% of all traffic is pirated but they just do nothing. The only reason you here people that get caught is they randomly pick someone every so often to try and scare others not to.

Not to mention they must first have the manpower and equipments to receive and process data they collected from every single devices in a country (or multiple countries...who knows), and obtain useful information from it. I don't think it's possible yet even if the process is automated.

It's not at all the same - Snowden didn't disclose the plans for some great new aircraft carrier, he disclosed the fact that our government was and is acting unconstitutionally behind our backs. 

It's our government breaking the law here, and if Snowden had to break the law himself to expose the much larger infringement, then that's a law I oppose and a "crime" I support. You can't compare the Snowden leaks about how our government is breaking the law to someone leaking sensitive military information to the Egyptian government for profit and then claim to be speaking objectively.

 

Why should the "If you have nothing to hide, what are you afraid of?"-line not apply to the government like it supposedly applies to everyone else? If the government isn't breaking the law, the leaking of any information should be considered a crime. If it is though, then the government should be held responsible, not the person who exposed them. If they hadn't been breaking the law, there would have been no reason for Snowden to leak anything.

1) You most likely are a criminal without even realizing it. The average UK citizen breaks the law 7 times a week, most without even realizing it.

 

 

2) You might not be a criminal now, but neither were the Japanese people in the US during world war 2. They were put in jail and interrogated for simply being Japanese. You never know how things might change in the future, and the part in the miranda warning that reads "anything said can and will be used against you in a court of law" is not joking. Basically anything you say, ever, can be used against you in some situation. That's why the right to remain silent is so important, because even the most honest and law abiding citizen on earth could end up being punished for a crime he/she did not commit, because of something said.

 

 

3) Even perfectly legal information about you might end up being devastating if they end up in the wrong hands. Here in Sweden people in Sigtuna (a part of Stockholm) people got mail in their mailbox saying that if they don't convert to Islam, or send money to ISIS they would have their homes raided and their throats sliced. Imagine if groups like that got a hold of not only your opinions of them but also your beliefs and where you live. Not that fun.

 

 

That's why the "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" argument is such bullshit. Because what is "right or wrong" is subjective. The people in ISIS believe that you are doing something wrong because you do not kill other people, and they believe it is the right thing to do. So in their eyes, you are doing something wrong. The Japanese people in the US during world war 2 did nothing wrong either, and yet they were imprisoned for simply being Japanese and they were seen as a threat.
