Galaxy S7 to feature Samsungs version of 3D Touch

Does anybody actually care about 3d touch? You can just emulate it with a long touch...

 

It's far different from long press.

 

I hope Samsung does a half-way decent job with it. Most of their Apple copy cat features are very poorly implemented and only created to appease spec-sheet buyers.

After the 5S, we got the S5 with finger print home button and with a gold color option.

After the 6S, we'll get the S7 with Force Touch and rose gold color option.

Apple shows the way, Android follows. Nothing surprising.

Yawn... I don't really see how this is a useful feature. It reminds me of the air view Samsung had before and I don't think more than a handful of people actually used that more than a few times just to try it out.

Just another thing to disable on the ever growing list of fairly useless gimmicks Samsung shoves into their phones.

You got it the other way around. I have never heard anyone say that Samsung never copies anyone but everyone else copies them. I have however heard that claim over and over regarding Apple. That's why people give Apple so much crap when they copy someone, because people claim they never do it and then gets pissed when someone copies Apple.

 

If Apple fanboys started saying that Apple copied stuff all the time from others, and stopped whining when someone copied Apple then a lot less people would feel the need to rub it in so much.

 

 

 

Just because rumours were around doesn't mean that it was taken. Just means that they did a poor job of keeping it under wraps. Either way Apple was still the first of the big phone makers to do it.

Now see, that's bullshit. You can't just say "Apple were the first big phone maker to do it". Huawei is a huge phone manufacturer (might very well ship more phones than Apple) but size does not matter. You might as well say "Samsung is the first Korean phone manufacturer to implement it". See how ridiculous it sounds when you find excuses just to say company X was first?

It's precisely because of bullshit like this that Apple gets so much shit for copying others.

Well, Apple stole the idea from Huawei. There are apperantly no original ideas; only copies of copies.

It would be nice to see the big players like Samsung and Apple actually try to inovate rather than just try to play ctach-up with one another.

That's pretty funny. Leaks of Force Touch for the 6S were going around for months, so Huawei rushed a smartphone out with it a few weeks before Apple (and without actually implementing the feature in their software, they had no time for that) so that they could claim they were "FIRST!!!"

Would rather want to see new type of batteries already than anything else be it software or hardware wise as far as smartphones. Why are we still on batteries that last few hours...q.q

You missed my point about Huawei. My point was that saying "the first X company to do it" sounds like a very pathetic excuse just to say some company did it first. Do you think "Samsung is the first Taiwanese company to implement it" sounds silly? That's how silly it sounds to me when I hear someone say Apple is the "first big-outside-of-Asia-company to implement it".

 

Apple copies other companies all the time and other companies copies Apple all the time. It might be too late at this point but if Apple users had just admitted that from the start then I think Android users would be far less obnoxious every time Apple copies someone.

Where the hell did you get that they are outselling Apple? IDC has Huawei shipping at 26.5 Million Units to 48 million from Apple. Apple has also gained market share for the last year from 11.8% to 13.5%

Well that's weird. IDC also says that Apple has lost market share while Huawei has gained. The only way for that to happen is if Huawei is selling more than Apple. I am talking about a 2-3 year period by the way. Not just during this year.

You guys realize that Force Touch was in other Apple devices before the iPhone 6S right? Huawei's 3D touch reached their phones before Apple put it in the 6S but Apple had been using Force touch in devices months prior in the MacBooks and Apple Watches. 

And other manufacturers have been doing pressure sensitive touch screens in non-phone devices for even longer. Your point? If we are talking solely about phones then I will point you to Huawei. If you talk about other types of gadgets then I will point you to some other company (probably Wacom).

Linking something which no one ever heard of before isn't a good argument. Some could point out that Android was also the "FIRST!!!" with TouchID with that Motorola phone from 2011 which has long been forgotten.

It's not about beint "FIRST!!!", all I'm saying is that sometimes Apple clearly states "yeah, this is the way forward" and most of the time the industry follows.

- Mechanical buttons was the rage all prior to the original iPhone and then Apple said a touchscreen keyboard was the future.

- Apple launches Siri with the iPhone 4S, Android follows with Google Now on Jelly Bean a few months later.

- Apple launches TouchID and a "champagne gold" iPhone with the 5S, Samsung follows a few months later with the S5.

- Apple launches ForceTouch and a "rose gold" iPhone with the 6S, pretty sure Samsung will follow with the S7.

Of course Apple sometimes copies Android: NFC and widgets are notorious examples and both iOS and Android followed Windows Phone's flat design but Android is much less industry-leading when launching a new feature than Apple. well i can argue that siri on the iphone 4s wasnt very useful at all but google now is legitimately useful so that means apple is following google by your logic

If you actually read into why phone companies stay away from micro SDs you will understand why they do it. Trust me it might be good for you but others not so much. Battery yes I want a 3 inch phone that lasts me 2 days

I'm not overly interested in this, I don't see it being that useful. That said, I guess I'll have to try it before I go off and start slandering it.

It'll likely be in the Note6, and if so I'll try it there. Maybe they'll think of some super awesome way to make it work.

Personally I think curved screens could have their uses if they're implemented properly. Something like PinTasking.

 

I think if Samsung just added a removable battery, microSD, and had a thicker phone you'd all be complaining about how they haven't really added anything and it's basically the same phone as the one before it.

Well they didn't really take that from Huawei as the phones were shown off/released within a week of each other.

It's been part of Android since the beginning of the OS. It just wasn't implemented.

Its just that Samsung have a history of included it, even if their version is shit and doenst work, like their first phones with fingerprint readers - they just slapped them in there and hoped for the best

 

If they want to take time to implement the hardware and software properly, then cool, copy away !!

That's sort of how Samsung operates. Try something, throw it to the market, if they like the idea, then improve on it from there.
It's an odd approach, and I have a feeling it's Samsung of old, but that was their business strategy.

I think they're changing that going forward.

Personally I think a better idea is simply leaking ideas into the wild, and seeing how the tech community reacts to it. If most shout "that's the stupidest idea ever!" don't try it in your product.

Your Google Now point is flawed. It wouldn't have taken them a few months to put together software and release it, they were clearly already working on it.

Fingerprint sensors were a good idea. Guess what, so are air bags but you don't complain that more than one company has those do you?

Really? I wouldn't. I'd much rather have a thin phone that will last through one solid day.

They can easily get more battery life if they implement tech advances, such as removing one of the layers between the backlight and the display, thus requiring significantly less power to get the same image.

I guess that's why there's battery cases for people like you

micro sd isn't really worth the hassle. every time i take a picture, no snapshot of it shows up and it's basically an invalid picture. plus you can't download apps onto it. so i hate microsd reallly.

That's not microsd's fault, it's krappy kitkat on up android's fault. Jellybean had sd card access. Also 3Dtouch is 3D stupid...."Opening apps is soooo hard, I wish SOMEONE made a way to half open them..."

Google Now is the best personal assitant now but at launch it was pretty useless too. All I'm saying is that Google Now wouldn't have been launched in 2012 if it wasn't for Siri a few months earlier.

To be fair, we can look at pretty much any tech these days and trace ideas back to some guy in a garage who patented or wrote about an idea in 1889 (sarcasm, kids) and say that they stole the idea. 

 

• Apple didn't invent the idea of a tablet, but they sure as hell made the market what it is today. 
• Apple didn't invent the hard drive/flash based portable music player, but it wasn't until the iPod that it was a popular for music
• Apple didn't invent digital distribution for music and video, but if it wasn't for iTunes...
• Google didn't invent the idea of the app store (google play), but if it wasn't for google...
• Apple didn't invent the touch screen smart phone, but if it wasn't for the iPhone and iOS....

You get the idea.

 

It's not about who came up with the idea first, but who implemented it the best and more importantly, developed the idea and made it useable in a way that adds value. If we all hold onto our cookies and don't share, then society as a whole will stall in it's development of tomorrow's tech, as tomorrows technology is built on today. The problem that we face at the moment is that large corporations are spending money on being patent farms to hinder the development of other tech companies that may (or may not) be genuinely investing in R&D with the hope of stopping their road to market. There was a really good post on LTT about the iPhone battery case and Morphi patents a while ago, if you can find it, that highlights the points of this post.

At no point in my posts did I complain. In fact I'm incredibly happy that a good feature in one platform end up in competing platforms: a few months after the luanch of Siri, Android users could use Google Now on $100 dollar smartphones, that's pretty amazing.

And even though Samsung isn't Android, 65% of sold Android phones are Samsung ones and given their huge market share, other manufactureres end up following Samsung (who itself follows Apple like a said above).

Let's take a look at phones with both a fingerprint scanner and a gold colour option:

- Samsung Galaxy S5, S6

- Samsung Galaxy Note 4, 5

- Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, A7 2016 (rose gold color also available)

- Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Premium

- HTC One M9 Plus

- Huawei Ascend Mate 8

- Huawei Nexus 6P

Pretty much every manufacturer has followed Apple's new 'revolutionary feature'.

I never owned an Apple product, but it's undeniable they still have a huge impact in the way smartphones move forward.
