Amazon said they found my email and password online?

Keudn

Last night my debit card was stolen and my account was drained. I called the bank this morning and HOPEFULLY got it sorted out. Last night I also got an email from Amazon saying this.

Hello,

At Amazon we take your security and privacy very seriously. As part of our routine monitoring, we discovered a list of email address and password sets posted online. While the list was not Amazon-related, we know that many customers reuse their passwords on several websites. We believe your email address and password set was on that list. For your security, we have assigned a temporary password to your account.

You will need to reset your password when you return to the Amazon.com site. To reset your password, click "Your Account" at the top of any page on Amazon.com. On the Sign In page, click the "Forgot your password?" link to reach the Amazon.com Password Assistance page. After you enter your email or mobile phone number, you will receive an email containing a personalized link. Click the link from the email and follow the directions provided.

Your new password will be effective immediately. We recommend that you choose a password that you have never used with any website.

Sincerely,

Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com

In September my steam account and email were hacked. Someone had to have a keylogger on my pc to do that, there really isn't any other way. Since then I have two factor authentication and all that good stuff on. What is everyones take on this though, could it be leftover from the first time my password was hacked? Or is this a new problem and I should probably reformat my computer?

Haha I can promise you it wasn't from any porn or anything, I don't use my computer for anything like that (as hard as it is to believe) and I'm not an idiot, I don't click sketchy links and I don't download sketchy shit. The only thing it could have been was a website that chrome said is malicious and to close immediately, I closed it but I'm guessing it still downloaded a keylogger.

Then I legitimately don't know where else it could have come from other than possibly a movie torrent that had a keylogger in it

I'm glad Amazon took action.

You should be using a credit card instead of a debit card for shopping online.

Don't have and never will get a credit card

Good credit is a good thing, and you can only get good credit with a credit card.

They're not big, scary things, as long as you pay the bill on time. That's what gets you good credit. I use credit for smaller stuff.

I used to be quite active here.

I have a credit card and use it to buy things like drinks from work or gasoline for my car. Occasionally I'll buy groceries with it, but when applying for a loan or getting an apartment, companies will look at your credit history. If you have none, they may decline your request altogether or give you higher rates.

thankfully the government doesn't care about credit scores when it gives students loans. They just say f* it and charge 25% interest! :D YAY AMERICAN HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM

(but at least you build credit that way)

No one says you need credit, don't take out loans simple. I have taken personal finances classes, trying to achieve good credit scores and get the bonuses just ends up in you spending more anyways, pay cash, simple

You don't need credit if you don't take out loans, pay with cash (houses are different, yes I know, I'm not getting into a dave ramsey lecture)

I'm not getting into why credit and debt is bad, I'm asking if I should nuke my PC to be safe or if this is probably over and just leftover email dumps from the first time

It's probably a keylogger or somebody tracking you're internet.

Sketchy shit.

Antivirus and antimalware and anti-anything-bad scan right now lmao.

IMO if that doesn't get rid of anything, ENTIRELY fresh PC restart

Thank you for the on topic answer lol >.> <.<.... The first time I scanned and found nothing, I can scan again but I think I may not find anything

I have a couple questions now...(1) do you live in Europe with their mostly free colleges? (2) Is your family rich? (3) are you smart enough to get full scholarships to college?(4) did you somehow land a high paying job -w/o a degree- to save up money before college?

If you answered no to the above there is no way you can get through college without a loan (at least not a good one). Even my genius friends with 4.0 GPAs had to take out at least a couple thousand in loans.

now to stay on topic! Fresh restart! Scans might not get the lil bastard and they could still get your data even after you think you cleaned it all up

Try entering your email on https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and see whether it agrees that your account details have been compromised. There are quite a lot of sites in its database.

Wow, it returned that it was found on 5 breached sites, that was actually really helpful!

It's always best to have it in case of emergencies. There's like 0 wrong in having one.

On your OP, it's probably best to wipe the system, and start fresh- also, I think I read about a keylogger that can hide in the BIOS.. So.. Flash that? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

I used to be quite active here.

I can get full scholarships to local colleges but that isn't my point, you certainly can get through college without loans if you apply for lots of scholarships and work. You may have to work your ass off but it will be worth not having loans.

Annnyyyways my first scan didn't find anything, I can try again with more programs but I may just have to play it safe and reformat all my drives
