FX-6300 or i5-6500 - No Fanboys

Xelvanox

Hey everyone,

I'm planning on building my second computer within the coming months and I've ran into a bit of a problem. My budget is under $1k, the lower the better, and I've thrown together a few component lists in the $600-800 range. My problem is deciding whether going with Skylake is worth the extra cost.

I'm planning on going with a $200ish graphics solution, likely a GTX 960 or R9 380, whichever I can find the best deal on at the time of purchase. An AMD FX-6300, AM3+ board, and DDR3 would be good enough in most applications, but an i5-6500, Z170 board, and DDR4 would certainly be a more upgradeable and long term solution.

My workload is primarily 1080p gaming, most other tasks not being cpu intensive enough to consider.

So anyone who has the FX-6300 or is in a similar situation, what do you think? Is it worth the extra $150 future-proofing tax to upgrade to the newer Intel gear, or should I settle for the cheaper alternative?

Go with Haswell and not Skylake. Hopefully it'll be a big enough saving.

Sig under construction.

Im an intel fanboy but for your build i would recommend AMD. Its cheaper and your correct on your observation that the gaming will not be to CPU intensive. I would go for a little better graphics card personally.

You know it's sad when you have to tell no fanboys allowed. Can't we just all be friends?

On to your question, the i5 is a far better option. The IPC is far superior, and the extra 2 cores will not make a difference (at all). Even for games that will leverage more cores, it still won't perform as well. It does not matter how much cheaper the AMD option is, it is never the best one.

Instead of Skylake, why not go with Devil's Canyon instead? It'll be cheaper than skylake.

Either go with FX-83XX or haswell/devils canyon i5 because it will perform much better and DDR3 RAM is currently really cheap

The fx-6300 is an old cpu now. It would definitely benefit you to at least go with a newer i5 as opposed to the skylake line

I would vote for that Skylake or i5 or i5 4460 Haswell i5. Still performs great and should cut the price a bit. In gaming the i5 performs quite bit better than the FX CPU.

I don't care what Linus says. Don't buy a 960.

Oh the irony :P

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820.

But it's not even x86! There's no chance it would work!

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820.

I like your style.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I'll consider previous generation i5's as well, but $100+ extra is no small sum. I''ll probably end up delaying my build for a few weeks to save up for an Intel chip, but you've all given tons of insight already.

Well, there are some emulators like DosBox or Limbo...

it would still be way to slow to emulate that at a desirable speed. And surely you're not expecting accelerated graphics inside this emulated machine?

Maybe not really irony, but I thought it was silly you asked for no fanboys, but you dont see any reason to get a GTX 960.

Anyways, don't really want to go off topic on this thread
