Yeah the military uses capacitors so if they use them too they are military grade. It is marketing

It's just marketing for motherboards and stuff.

The term just means it's super durable that the military will use it because of course they need the most dependable durable items.

In my experience, "military grade" can be meaningless as I've seen products for the military that are not what I would define as "military grade."

With mobos and GPUs its just marketing. Military electronics use certain manufacturers capacitors and other smaller components. Same stuff is used by PC tech company -> now they can call it military grade. Just marketing gimmick.

If hardware actually has certification for dust, water, moisture, shock etc. resistance. Then its legit military grade.

Summary of implications: Assuming that any manufacturer actually meets these expectations, their parts are actually gonna be bloody reliable. However, there's no real certifying authority for "military grade". The only way to know is if the company produces an audit report AND a military proof-of-contract that shows it is actually selling such products to consumers. Given the lack of proof, I'll be quite skeptical of the manufacturer's claims.

 

For example, MSI claims to use "MIL-STD-810G". That is an incredibly impressive claim. They're essentially throwing the gauntlet at other manufacturers and saying that all of their products have adhere to the ideology behind the standard, which is:

 

 

MIL-STD-810 addresses a broad range of environmental conditions that include: low pressure for altitude testing; exposure to high and low temperatures plus temperature shock (both operating and in storage); rain (including wind blown and freezing rain); humidity, fungus, salt fog for rust testing; sand and dust exposure; explosive atmosphere; leakage; acceleration; shock and transport shock; gunfire vibration; and random vibration. The standard describes environmental management and engineering processes that can be of enormous value to generate confidence in the environmental worthiness and overall durability of a system design. The standard contains military acquisition program planning and engineering direction to consider the influences that environmental stresses have on equipment throughout all phases of its service life. The document does not impose design or test specifications. Rather, it describes the environmental tailoring process that results in realistic material designs and test methods based on material system performance requirements.

Finally, there are limitations inherent in laboratory testing that make it imperative to use proper engineering judgement to extrapolate laboratory results to results that may be obtained under actual service conditions. In many cases, real-world environmental stresses (singularly or in combination) cannot be duplicated in test laboratories. Therefore, users should not assume that an item that passes laboratory testing also will pass field/fleet verification tests.

What justifies "Military Grade" ?

 

To be military grade the componetns must be able to operate in a bigger temperature range:

 

 

  • Commercial: 0°C to 85°C
  • Industrial: −40°C to 100°C
  • Automotive: −40°C to 125°C
  • Extended: −40°C to 125°C
  • Military: −55°C to 125°C

 

However I'm not sure if the manufacturers have found a "light military spec." go use industrail or even commercial parts anyway. The military grade once are considerable more expensive, so they have a big interesst no to use them.

It's marketing, mostly. It means that they built it with more stuff than they needed to. And, like all military-grade stuff, if it breaks, good luck fixing it.

 

Some rubberized ribs on a clamshell phone make it "military-grade", but that doesn't make it more durable than, say, my Nokia N73 - which is totally unstoppable.

Not really, today there is a lot of higher quality stuff being issued (at least in the US) and it is because when a Unit is set to deploy they are given a budget and flexibility at the company level to order some pretty decent stuff, the supply Sargent are smart guys and know that cheap is cheap.
