Annonymous turn their attention to the KKK (Update - Names Released)

Master Disaster

Update - Theyve released the names yesterday, there's even a US Town Mayor.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/11/02/reports-hacktivist-groud-anonymous-publishes-names-alleged-ku-klux-klan-members/75039282/

So everyones favourite Internet Hacktivists have said they've managed to hack into some KKK members Twitter accounts and as a result have unearthed around 1,000 member names which they intend to release publically.

Sauce - http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/oct/29/anonymous-ku-klux-klan-members-reveal-names

The “hacktivist” collective Anonymous have vowed to release the names of “about 1,000” Ku Klux Klan members as part of an ongoing operation against the white supremacist group in the US.

The names were obtained after Anonymous gained access to a Klan twitter account, according to a tweet from the Operation KKK, as Anonymous have named the anti-Klan operation.

https://twitter.com/Operation_KKK/status/657334427446411264

Operation KKK’s Twitter account said that the name-dump will coincide with the one-year anniversary of the beginning of the group’s cyber-war with the Klan following a grand jury’s decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson for the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

https://twitter.com/Operation_KKK/status/657335422259867648

In November 2014, a local Missouri chapter of the KKK distributed fliers threatening violence against activists. The fliers warned protesters in Ferguson that they had “awakened a sleeping giant”.

In response, Anonymous declared war on the white supremacy group. They took over the KKK’s Twitter account and replaced its logo with their own – the account remains under Anonymous’ control to this day – and hit Klan-affiliated sites with DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks. They also released the names of a number of KKK members.

A press release posted online on Tuesday said: “After closely observing so many of you for so very long, we feel confident that applying transparency to your organizational cells is the right, just, appropriate and only course of action.”

“You made a clear and ever present enemy of Anonymous when you threatened the lives of protesters and the men and women representing Anonymous on the ground in Ferguson, Missouri in November of 2014,” the release said. “You continue to make threats to anons you believe you have identified, journalists, anyone in the public that speaks out against your behavior. Your threats and intimidation are unprovoked, unwanted and will not be tolerated.”

Anonymous is a disparate and amorphous group of hackers and online activists which originated on the anarchic message-board 4chan around 2003. Its name comes from the “anonymous” tag that posters on 4chan get; users of the site, as well as members of the group, both refer to themselves as “anons”.

Anonymous, which operates as a grassroots-style organisation with no visible leadership or membership structure, has chosen a disparate group of targets since its inception roughly 12 years ago. Its first high-profile operation, known as Project Chanology, targeted the Church of Scientology.

It has targeted child pornography rings and the Westboro Baptist church, and attacked PayPal when it withdrew support from WikiLeaks (for which two hackers were later imprisoned and a third given a suspended sentence.)

The practice of revealing someone’s identity online is known colloquially as “doxxing”. It is usually considered anathema to the culture of Anonymous; but they appear to have made an exception to this rule when it comes to lifting the hoods of Klan members.

The Twitter account chronicling “Op KKK” hinted on 15 October that more doxxing might be imminent.

https://twitter.com/Operation_KKK/status/654897341359493124

Founded after the civil war, the Ku Klux Klan is considered America’s oldest hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). At its height in the 1920s it had as many as four million members; today its membership is estimated at between 5,000 and 8,000.

“Ku Klux Klan, We never stopped watching you,” Anonymous said in Tuesday’s release. “We know who you are.”

“We never said we would only strike once,” it continued.

While they deserve everything that comes their way I disagree with the whole "doxxing" thing. Its dangerous and serves no real purpose at all.

Plus no matter how much I hate racists they are entitled to their own beliefs. They're wrong but thats their choice.

Please Annonymous, stop this now.

I thought anons were against censorship and for freedom of speech, no one really likes what the kkk has to say, but that doesn't really justify this, man they've gone downhill.

Does not compute.

Not forgetting the fact discriminating someone purely because of their skin colour is totally and utterly fucking retarded.

Even if it was 'freedom of speech', doesn't mean you can be a retard

I'm not saying I care that they did this, (I couldn't care less) I'm only saying that anons use to do things under two pretenses generally, lulz, and anti censorship hactivism, I honestly don't care what they do to the kkk as fuck the kkk, I'm just stating that anon needs to re-focus to stay relevant, as the kkk is about as relevant as tape media,

Also freedom of speech applies to everyone one not just those we like btw.

Anonymous are dangerous. As much as I dislike the KKK and their opinions, they are entitled to them. If they suspect the KKK members in question as being criminals then they should inform the police. There would be an investigation and it would go to court.

As its stands anonymous are just as bigoted as those they are attacking.

Reading some of the comments here, such as those quoted below, really has me worried about the future of the western values of liberty and freedom. It seems people wish to have freedom from speech rather than freedom of speech. Unless you have evidence that certain people have committed a crime (intimidation or violent acts etc) then you are just as bad as the KKK members imo.

Good!! can't wait to see these pos exposed!

Yeah people don't seem to understand that freedom of speech needs to apply to all in order to maintain the "freedom" part, granted the kkk is a horrible group, but even the stupidest racist is entitled to freedom of speech, and in turn we can bad mouth them back, which calls them out for being racist idiots.

They're a group notorious for not staying on the "opinions" only realm so moot. Besides, being entitled to an opinion doesn't means being entitled to an unchallenged opinion. Doxing is pretty borderline but kind of necessary since conspiring to not reveal one's membership to like I said, a group that does a lot more than just have "opinions" is just as unacceptable if not more.

Now you can discuss the merits of "fight fire with fire" and "by any means necessary" sure, but No this whole "They're entitled to their opinion" thing is basically a straw man.

Do you even know why the KKK exists? Whether or not it does the same things it did in the past is irrelevant by holding onto that name and the group it's self is saying they support what they did in the past!

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech it has to do with the sick history of this group and these people are standing there supporting it and keeping it running for generations!

By that logic the FBI should be disbanded, look freedom of speech has has nothing to do with morality of what is said or who it is said by, the only restrictions to freedom of speech are specific threats and in an attempt to cause panic and injury (yelling fire in a theater), hate speech though idiotic doesn't qualify, and the actions of people who are dead have no bearing, if these things weren't true the freedom of speech would be a lie.

Guys, don't turn this into a flame war else I will ask a mod to lock this topic myself.

Freedom of speech must apply to everyone otherwise its not true freedom.

Luckily we've reached a point in time where the large majority of people are wise enough to realise that their beliefs are wrong and that you can't go around discriminating against people because of their race, religion or any other factor.

Anon seem to not realise that this behaviour is in fact damaging. If any of them are guilty of any crimes and they publicly "DOX" them it jeopardises any police investigation as the defence team can simply argue there's no chance of a fair trial due to information being leaked into the public domain and get any case thrown out of court before it even begins.
