Dx12 Amd, Intel and Nvidia

Could 2016 be the time for a new Amd rig? Or will Intel spank the cpu market again? And Nvidia be the card to have again?

But with VR, DX12 and what looks like more games partnering with Amd because of the consoles market, could this be team reds year?

AMD's cpu's will likely not be worth it in my opinion, however their gpu's look strong for dx12

Too early to tell. Intel is still dominating the CPU market, and will probably continue to do so unless Zen is very good. AMD GPUs seem to be favoured for DX12 in the very few tests we have right now. We can't tell until more DX12 benchmarks and games come out, and we also don't know how AMD and Nvidia's new cards will handle DX12.

Zen would have to be amazing. Not sure that would even make a difference. And AMD hasn't exactly been slouching in terms of gpus, but they just can't price them high enough to actually turn a profit. The only way it would be AMD's year is if someone finally buys them (the company) so they actually have money to work with. AMD's real problem is lack of organization and funds. They can sell out of Zen on day 1, but that won't turn the whole company around. Let's just hope they have the sense to price it so they actually turn a profit on something. I applaud their ability to stay performance and price competitive, but that came at a serious financial cost.

So far, the only thing that's been noted is that VR benefits from the low-latency of HBM, hence the Fiji-based chips are the best option for it. As for DX12 - Nvidia's GM200 chips are fine but the rest are tosh with it.

It could be time for AMD to take a stance in the high-mid market, but for the high-high end, Intel will still dominate.

For GPUs, I don't think that AMD could recover, even if they release the best GPUs around

Just thinking/guessing on speculation that playstation4 and xbox one sell more games then PC. Theses consoles run Amd chipset, so if I was a game company I would want to optimism for this. Hence partner with Amd and the Asynchronous compute thing.

The thing is, AMD doesn't have the time or resources to partner with every game that releases on multiple platforms. Nvidia will still have its own partnerships with devs. Also, that doesn't actually benefit AMD a great deal other than some advertising.

Oh I love both Intel and NVIDIA, without a doubt, but with CPU's that by now look like something from the stone age and a "brand new" line of rebranded graphicscards and a single actual new high end GPU that only trades blows with NVIDIA's year old offering and is still getting absolutely wrecked by the 980Ti I fail to see how this could possibly be a biased or even false assessment.

And nothing you just wrote seems a bit off? AMD owns the mid level GPU market, you don't get anything from Nvidia worth owning until the 980ti, which I drooooollll over every time I see one. But price to price, AMD destroys Nvidia. They rely on the 980ti selling overpriced cheap GPUs. Your contribution has been noted, decoder ring is in the mail.

I agree about CPUs but GPU-wise, everything except the 980 Ti is getting beat into the ground at the moment

Unless Zen prove to be a success (which I honestly doubt and even if it is, I doubt most people will switch to AMD for a few extra percent of performances), AMD will probably end up declaring bankruptcy/be bought off by a third party and not allowed to make x86 CPUs anymore.

 

But really, there's no way to tell until we actually reach that point, we can't see the future.

I'm going to say Intel will still be on top and still a hell of a lot more money but AMD will still be a good choice if your cant afford Intel because its cheaper and its not much slower.

The GPU side is a bit of a puzzle though. They offer cracking value for money only being beaten right at the top end, Freesync is cheaper than G-sync too, and yet they still only have a small market share.

On a couple tests, yes. Even if it's consistent, we don't know if DX12 is going to be used a great deal or if older APIs will still be king.
