It won't bottle neck it since, they are essentially in the same weight class.  If you're thinking about doing a build with a GTX 970, please before you get the LTT dogs barking at your door, get an R9 390X

I'm building a small form factor pc, and the 970 is best card that comes in a reference cooling design in my budget which is about $300, if anyone finds a better deal please let me know.

In some games, Yes.

But those are the games so badly optimized that no one expects great fps, and everyone just kind of accepts the lower fps. Games like Arma II, DayZ Standalone, and Arma III all fit this bill. Hell, my 4790k overclocked to 4.7ghz would bottleneck the fuck out of a 970 given the right kind of fight on arma III.

 

In the overwhelming majority of games, no, it will not bottleneck.

I have full 99-100% gpu usage at all times unless the software is shit and buggy.

Only bad pc ports do badly, but thats all cards not just the 970.

The only thing that makes an i5+970 look bad in comparison is 3dmarks physics scores. Games are pretty flawless.

Esp at 1080p.

in 99% of the games no.

in modern games no.

in some CPU intensive games with many units on the screen, games based on old single-threaded engines (AKA some very bad MMORPG and RTS) with not much GPU processing requirements: yes it will and so does an overclocked i7.

 

SOme games are CPU bound, but the i5-4590 is a good match for a GTX 970 at 1080p gaming, and a 980ti for 1440p gaming.

 

it's a fine CPU, a strong quad-core intel chip like that is all you need for gaming to be honest, it's a very good CPU choice.

 

if my rig was stolen or something and i would have to build a new rig it would feature an i5-4590 and a GTX 980 (im gaming at 1440p) but for 1080p the GTX 970 is perfectly suited and this CPU as i said is a perfect choice.

 

i would mess in the settings to force max turbo of 3.7ghz across 4 cores and i would call it a day, CPU wise it's all you need for gaming.
