Volkswagon defeats emissions... 18 Billion dollar fine... 

Toyota accelerator pedal results in 89 deaths... 1.2 Billion dollar fine. 

GM faulty ignition has resulted in 169 deaths... 900 Million dollar fine.

 

Seems fair.

Haha anytime I read something like this happening I laugh and proceed to say "you should apply some water on that burn" as much as I love your cars VW this is a big no-no. Naughty.

Putting the joke aside. The engines currently used cant be pushed further in the aspect of emissions. I believe some of you noticed the newer models(especially the ones with small engine) has a lag between the gas pedal movement and the reaction. This caused by the MCU calculating out things in a way that the emissions wont go over spec. Its ridiculous how much electronics go into cars only for this false hope... I will keep buying motors and cars with a bowden between the valve and the pedal until they realize how pointless is this "route".

Why are people taking about CO2?  I thought this was about Volkswagens TDI engines and them rigging the E-test to botch detection of Nitric oxide/Nitrogen dioxide.  The concern for diesel motors is NOx.  Though a greenhouse gas the primary concern is smog and its particular matter that embeds in to the lungs.  This has a lot more to do with healthcare(lung cancer) than environmental concern(s)

 

Diesel engines are more fuel efficient when they are HOT(generally speaking), however really hot combustion generates more NOx emissions.  It's very easy to see VW's incentive to circumvent the regs and run hot unless durring an E-Test to sell more cars because of their greater efficiency to the customer at the pump.

I am amazed at how they thought they wpuld get away from this. It is like the remote car hacking all over again and just shows how out of the loop car companies are.

Regarding climate change, it is my field of work and I would really appreciate if people stoped talking out of their asses about stuff they know nothing about.

Unfortunately its not that simple... Its not a phone which you can hook up to the computer and flash some hack to run some "cooked" FW. Its a complex network of control units with complex security mechanisms. Mess just one component and if it goes wrong you can go to the local VW/audi service for a repair. And it will be expensive or in worst case they will refuse to repair it... :rolleyes:

If we just say all our cars are efficient then people won't think about global warming and we will realize there is nothing wrong and the Earth has climate change. Take a look at the Ice Age it was it was cold all over then the Earth warmed 30 degrees and it all melted! OH MY! If we are concerned over 1 degree hotter then the last we have some issues. Good job VW

Exaggerating? They call themselves "Volkswagen" yet way too many people in Germany can not afford a regular ass Golf. Even the Polo is too expensive for what it is.

i am insanely pissed off by this. I have been a VW fan for years. I even considered buying one of these diesel cars.

 

The 2 options they have are software update that would reduce performance and/or milage or adding those urea things that the luxury brands have.

 

They will most likely go the cheaper software route since it's cheaper than the urea tank. I personally believe they should go with the urea, they promised 35mpg, they better keep that around!

 

 

This BS is making me reconsider VW for my next car, but nobody else does nice diesel wagons that I know of so I'm kinda torn over this crap.

As someone who has purposefully gone to inspectors that do a basic ass inspection on purpose, I could not care less.

Lights

forward

reverse

horn

windshield wipers

check the tires

 

Good to go.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Why are people taking about CO2?  I thought this was about Volkswagens TDI engines and them rigging the E-test to botch detection of Nitric oxide/Nitrogen dioxide.  The concern for diesel motors is NOx.  Though a greenhouse gas the primary concern is smog and its particular matter that embeds in to the lungs.  This has a lot more to do with healthcare(lung cancer) than environmental concern(s)

 

Diesel engines are more fuel efficient when they are HOT(generally speaking), however really hot combustion generates more NOx emissions.  It's very easy to see VW's incentive to circumvent the regs and run hot unless durring an E-Test to sell more cars because of their greater efficiency to the customer at the pump.

CO2 is an issue, but everyone seems to be missing the point that the emissions from diesel that the EPA is most concerned with with NOx, Sulfur dioxide and Particulate Matter (PM) which are just awful pollutants.  The EPA is mostly a public health agency a.k.a. they go after things in the environment that hurts public health.

 

A big problem why diesel was hard to catch on here ( in the states) is that the Diesel fuel we used in the past was full of sulfur, we only recently switched to "clean diesel fuel," but it was very difficult to get those new engines popular

Toyota accelerator pedal results in 89 deaths... 1.2 Billion dollar fine. 

GM faulty ignition has resulted in 169 deaths... 900 Million dollar fine.

 

Seems fair. 

They probably don't want to kill a company after pouring billions of taxpayer dollars into it to save it. Also, jobs and future tax revenue.

Yea..cause they're shit.

I understand the need, but they were gutless, inefficient and more costly to maintain with all the iterative changes to the fuel, exhaust and intake systems over the years while the oil boys slowly made the changes to their game.

Lots of truckers lost their shirts being caught in the middle having to pay everyone more and getting less mpg and less $/mile at the same time.
