I was mostly confused by people taking RAM out of the motherboards, what was the point when you have to put it back in anyway?

I wasn't trying to be a dick...? I was simply telling you I thought it was up a week ago and then edited in that it was. And no, I did not know that you were talking about today's Vessel video.

One of the funniest videos for a long time. Two thumbs up.

So are workstation GPUs not worth it for editing? Both companies seem to be making a big deal for Firepro or Quadro at in premier and at least in america the W7100 is cheaper than a titan X, dunno about the quadros. Also adobe seems to be supporting Open CL more than CUDA in recent years.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I think it depends on the programs that you use. The workstation GPUs are generally can't compare to the Gaming cards on performance in the same price range (That W7100 would get murdered by a Titan X). Gaming cards are good as cheap cards that put out a lot of power compared to workstation. I think Workstation cards only makes sense for editing if you're into 10 bit, need super stable cards, or need the extra GPU RAM. Personally, I wouldn't think workstation GPUs would be worth it unless you're handing ultra massive and high budget critical video editing.

In my case, I do blueprinting, and when I ran a gaming card for my program, I would get very strange artifacts (like walls going through roofs). I bought a FirePro V7900 and haven't had any issues since then (Well, except for AMD's driver installations giving me headaches). I think I might jump for a Quadro next, but the FirePros are so cheap for the performance in the workstation world.

Scrap Yard Wars mini episode - Have the editing staff break into two teams and make them cobble together a computer from the spare parts around the office.

Teams would not be allowed to look at "How to build a PC" guides or consult Linus and Luke.

I think throwing them out into the world with a limited budget, while likely very amusing, would just be too much.

So the only people who actually know anything about Computer hardware are Luke and Linus? I would imagine alot of people who are really into hardware and computers in general would love to work there, but somehow you manage to hire all these people who dont actually know anything about it, and even worse, seem like they are totally uninterested (excluding the Camera crew ofcourse). Hearing that NickyV guy fail at building the PC and then dismissing every suggestion Linus makes actually pissed me off quite a bit.

Why dont you ask possible hires to build a PC (its not like your short on parts by the looks of your warehouse) when they come in for an interview?

Well to be fair, it'd be rather rare in the job of an editor/camera operator to have to build a system. This seems to be more of case that because they were so busy they got the editors to do the vast amount of the work to save on time.

EDIT - Also worth a mention is that the opposite applies. Linus works at a media production house and knows little about editing and camera work.

Normandy - Intel Core i5 3470, 8 GB Corsair Vengenace LP, EVGA GTX 960 SSC, Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP, WD Blue 1 TB, Seagate 320 GB (steam), Seagate 320 GB (experimental, second OS, etc), Windows 8.1 + Ubuntu 14.10

Garrus - HP Stream 11

Mind blown. Only 3-4 people know how build a PC. I know there is no need for them to know that, but they are dealing with PC parts every day and don't know how to put it all together?
