“empty” Epson ink cartridges are still 20 percent full

The high-end Epson 9900 printer, which retails for around £3,000 ($5,000), reports that ink cartridges are empty even when they are still about 15-20 percent full. This behaviour is particularly egregious as a set of 700ml ink cartridges for the Epson 9900 printer comes in at around £2,500—so, users are being forced to replace the cartridges when there's still about £500 of ink available.

This finding comes from Bellevue Fine Art, a printing company in Seattle. When their Epson 9900 printer reported that an ink cartridge was down below 1 percent capacity, it refused to print any more pages until the cartridge had been replaced. Bellevue Fine Art, in a fit of curiosity, decided to cut open some of the allegedly empty cartridges to see how much ink was actually left.

Does Epson put in extra ink to compensate? No. We've checked:

the Epson Stylus Pro 9900 has 11 cartridges !!!!

and I absolutely "love" this part:

Bellevue Fine Art has contacted Epson about this issue "many times," even sending cartridges to the company for examination. So far, though, they have "always been ignored, or told that we were just wrong." The company is hoping that the video demonstrating the issue (embedded above), which has gathered some 500,000 views in the last few days, will finally get Epson to respond.

Not sure about all cartridges, but this is normal for those that you get with a Samsung printer (yes I said a Samsung printer). It says empty but after installing a custom firmware, boom, 30%+ becomes instantly available. With that said, I'm talking about a $70 cartridge, this on the other hand...

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

I saw a thing about this on TV a long time ago. Some printers have a mechanical counter, that when reset allowed the printer to use the cartridge for well over 3x the amount of pages specified (and well past the artificial limit). King of old news while being frustrating as well. (I used to have an old Lexmark printer-now dead BTW) that would be running out of ink for 2-3 months after it said it was running out-the cartridges were more expensive though  and I think I broke the enforced limit on the amount of times a cartridge could be used).

Its not. Its to get you to buy another cartridge. Note that they don't say low but empty.

This is about Epson. BTW can you physically see how much ink is in the cartridge? If you can then you won't be going through this BS. The BS you will be going through is not being able to re-fill the cartridges (I shouldn't have pulled my old Canon printer apart - re-filling always worked as it was a dumb printer).

As far as I know, this has always been a thing with printers that detect ink levels. I had to do some feature disabling in our printer at work so that it would stop telling me the ink was low and let me print again (been about 3 weeks and it's still fine).

I actually expected HP to be there. But I am not surprised.

My Brother printer has been great for me. Their toner are inexpensive yet good quality. The printer itself has features to clean the printer and maintain it. And when you are out of toner, you can force the printer to print regardless, and you just enable that once, and it is set.

The drivers are fairly light, with options to install only the drivers and nothing else.

So far my printer had day 1 Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 drivers.

While I know that getting the toner refilled is not only cheap but actually easy to do, I still buy genuine one to support the company.

Now, my experience is only with 1 printer (which prints fast including transfer speed (via Ethernet) and processing), and it is a b/w laser printer. But so far so good. If anyone is looking for b/w printer, check out Brother.

That's pretty much in line with what I'm seeing from my current multi-function Canon-except it actually prints the cartridge dry before warning you-so you need to make sure each page is printing properly when the ink is low (and you can physically see how much ink each cartridge has left as well).

Look I wouldn't be mad if this companies called a spade a fucking spade: Tell me that you're an ink company and give me a printer to use the ink for free. It's like going to a movie theater: tell me you're a fucking over priced pop corn and snacks store and give me a better price on the admission ticket, don't charge me on the ticket and then charge me twice as much for fucking pop corn and try to illegally send me to jail for bringing in my own soda and snacks (Yes that actually happened in Mexico a theater had some kids arrested, not just evicted from the premised but actually arrested, just for sneaking in snacks.Because fuck laws apparently)

It wouldn't surprise me if a printer company was lying to make more money out of you.

 

There are ways around this however due to mods and hacks.

Epson's mentality of programming how many pages the cartriges can print is a very old topic , i mean, it was a thing like when i was in highschool and i grad 5 years ago

Back with the very first home ink printers, when hp ink cartdriges were transparent, they would fill all the space in the cartdriges with ink, then after a couple years they started to put a small balloon inside the cartdriges, it took more than half of the empty space so the ink could only be half or less what they had in the beginning.

I actually expected HP to be there. But I am not surprised.

My Brother printer has been great for me. Their toner are inexpensive yet good quality. The printer itself has features to clean the printer and maintain it. And when you are out of toner, you can force the printer to print regardless, and you just enable that once, and it is set.

The drivers are fairly light, with options to install only the drivers and nothing else.

So far my printer had day 1 Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 drivers.

While I know that getting the toner refilled is not only cheap but actually easy to do, I still buy genuine one to support the company.

Now, my experience is only with 1 printer (which prints fast including transfer speed (via Ethernet) and processing), and it is a b/w laser printer. But so far so good. If anyone is looking for b/w printer, check out Brother.

Not sure about all cartridges, but this is normal for those that you get with a Samsung printer (yes I said a Samsung printer). It says empty but after installing a custom firmware, boom, 30%+ becomes instantly available. With that said, I'm talking about a $70 cartridge, this on the other hand...

I have the Brother HL-2270DW. The printer has 2 downsides:

-> Shitty fan, making it noisy

-> Can't set the set time the printer actually sleep. Making the fan spin for a massive 10min, from the last print job. Sometimes I feel figuring out how to open the printer and replace the fan with a Noctua one with a fan resistor. But i never got the time. And it seams tricky to open.

This is about Epson. BTW can you physically see how much ink is in the cartridge? If you can then you won't be going through this BS. The BS you will be going through is not being able to re-fill the cartridges (I shouldn't have pulled my old Canon printer apart - re-filling always worked as it was a dumb printer).

you should totally make a guide on how to mod it with a noctua fan :o
