Title pretty much.

Why does it exist? It's kinda stupid, and IMO, it's probably just because one company advertises better than another company can.

Keep your comments civil because I'm not gonna get warned for your stupidity.

Becuase people like to belong in groups, and brands are pretty easy to relate to.

This is a very intersting article on the subject: http://www.zdnet.com/article/anthropologist-confirms-apple-is-a-religion/

because if you buy bread from one bakery, and its good, you'll want that same bread again.

humans are animals of habit, and we very easily get used to the specific set of advantages and disadvantages a specific brand gives us.

EDIT: if this thread manages to stay civil, it should actually be a really interesting read.

It's built on experiences and basic psychology, really. If I buy an NVIDIA GPU and I have a great time with it (case in point, my GTX 970, Shield Portable and GTX 960), I'll continue to purchase NVIDIA's products due to the positive feelings I have towards them whereas if I buy an AMD GPU and it has issues (I had a fair bit of driver issues with my old HD 7850 that were issues with the drivers themselves) I will think of AMD's products as unfinished and discontinue buying them (though in reality I didn't, I bought two R9 270Xes and continue to recommend their products based upon my more recent experiences with them.

Because people have this natural instinct to defend their purchasing decisions as better than everyone else's.

might be a tad on the extreme side.

but yes, thats defenately a thing.

--

lack of data to compare is probably related here as well, people are too fast with buying one product on one side, and buying another product on the other side, and decide based on those singular products which side is superior.

EDIT: i'll add a personal example: i like my 970 strix, i see nothing wrong with it. but that may be because the strix is literally the only high end card i have since my HD5770 that fell apart after 4 years of service. if tomorrow someone sends me an EVGA card, and its faster, quieter and has less sag, i'll recommend EVGA over my strix, but i have no experience with EVGA, so i cannot tell good or bad about them.

Brand loyalty is not that irrational, you seem to confuse it with fanboyism.

Brand loyalty builds up over time, if you have repeatedly good experience with the products and/or support of a certain brand most people tend to prefer said brand over others because they already know that they get a decent product.

We are all creatures of habit to some extend, most people won't change something if they already have something that works for them.

When I first entered the custom PC world not so long ago, I was like Intel & Nvidia all the way, Asus only, Seagate sucks, etc...

But then I got myself a custom PC and I ended up buying cheaper and bang-for-the-buck components. And then I was "loyal" to the brands from which I had bought my stuff.

And eventually I realized that while not ALL brands are good, most of them are. Some push the limits with cutting edge technology and the most extreme products and some stay in the back and make the more used products. But all get the job done. So when it comes to choosing, I usually go for what looks best to you or is the cheapest.

Brand loyalty usually stems from prior experience with a product, good or bad. My 2013 Chevrolet Equinox (bought new) has had so many problems and been in the shop to be repaired so many times that I can't forsee myself purchasing another GM product any time soon, for example. I have had so many bad experiences with ATI (and later AMD) graphics cards, back from when they were far ahead of the competition through to when they weren't, where I simply can't see myself buying an AMD graphics card.

There is also brand preference. Kingston and Corsair have been (as best I can tell) good sponsors for LTT, so if it comes down to two different cases for a build I'm working on and Corsair is a contender, I'll likely go with them out of good will for the sponsorships of a product (LMG/LTT) I greatly enjoy.

Biased fanboyism is ridiculous and silly, however. You should be looking at all available options for your particular situation (i.e. car buying, graphics card buying). Not doing so simply makes no sense.

If I have good experiences with a company I like to keep buying from them. Like with Seasonic power supplies, they always last me forever so I don't buy anything that isn't a Seasonic design, whether it's my own build or one I'm doing for a friend.

I'll give a different response than everyone else.

Brand loyalty exists because we are very pleased with our the purchased product. It meant ones expectations or even surpass them, which create confidence, and trust in a company to continue to deliver such quality product. This is like having a person working for you. If that person is amazing, and brings great value for your money, you'll highly recommend him or her to future jobs that person applies to for him or her to continue to grow. That is of course, if you are a leader, and not a boss. (boss is: "you do this, you do that, the way I want it to be done". Leader is about pushing one to grow to bring new ideas in, let the person do his/her works with potential of doing a better job than initially expected. Anyway).

So that is why brand loyalty exists. We recommend or continue to purchase a good or service, because we were really satisfied with it, and wants others to get the best experience possible, and be equally satisfied using the product.
