Netflix Exec Says You Can't Handle Offline Playback!

Let's start with a quote from the article:

"Neil Hunt, Netflix's chief product officer, has told Gizmodo that the service won't offer offline playback of content because it will create a "paradox of choice" that will leave some users "paralysed" and unable to use Netflix"

I understand the fear of too many options and possible confusion, but this is just PR hot air. This basically tells me Netflix believes their users are idiots. If you don't want to confuse less tech savvy customers, bury the feature a little so only people that know it's there can find it. This is clearly a dumb response to Amazon introducing this feature instead of them. They have also stated they never intend on introducing this feature. That's fine but don't treat your customers like idiots.

Because being online on Netflix doesn't open you up to a massive archive of shows and movies, more than one would feasibly be able to store on one or two hard drives and still look acceptable.

That explanation literally makes no sense.

I know why they don't want to. Google play music offers offline playback and decrypting then jacking the music is easy. Couple ways to do it.

I could jack all the high-quality movies I want then upload them. Probably the real reason... or money.

 

Even though recording is possible.

In a day and age where we have internet almost literally everywhere, why are we even discussing this? It's an odd explanation, but the feature is uninteresting at best anyways.

Its useful for when you go on a long trip or travelling where connection can be spotty or non existent. Just because you find the feature uninteresting doesn't mean lots of people would use it. Data plans aren't cheap either in some places.

A paradox of choice. What? Like really what does that even mean? You don't hear about people passing out on choosing which Netflix show to watch. Like what? Companies need more Elon Musks not mr generic rich bob who doesn't know what he is doing and was born into being rich

In a day and age where we have internet almost literally everywhere, why are we even discussing this? It's an odd explanation, but the feature is uninteresting at best anyways.

There are lots and lots of places where there is no or very poor reception. Also, data caps sucks.

Even if I had great Internet access 100% of the time I still would prefer to have my media stored locally because of the huge amount of data I would end up using. On top of that you save power too. Using 4G at all times uses a ton of battery.

 

 

 

Stupid PR statement is stupid. ViaPlay and Amazon has this feature and I have never heard anyone say that it's bad.

 

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the paradox of choice about how more choices don't make us happier? Offline playback wouldn't make us less happy because it doesn't change the amount of videos we can choose from. The biggest reason why some people think we become less happy when we get more options is because we start doubting our choices, wondering if we made the right decision to pick one over another. But in this case we don't actually pick one thing over another. We still end up with the same movie, and we can watch it now or later.

If NetFlix really cared about the paradox of choice then they would reduce the number of videos they had in their library.

I understand the fear of too many options and possible confusion, but this is just PR hot air. This basically tells me Netflix believes their users are idiots. If you don't want to confuse less tech savvy customers, bury the feature a little so only people that know it's there can find it. This is clearly a dumb response to Amazon introducing this feature instead of them. They have also stated they never intend on introducing this feature. That's fine but don't treat your customers like idiots.

They don't think you are stupid.  Or at least, they only think you are stupid to the extent that you will believe the flimsy excuse they are offering.

 

When the real truth is that they just don't want you getting any crazy ideas that you might actually own a copy of whatever it is you've downloaded.

 

They want you to keep renting everything over and over again.

I know why they don't want to. Google play music offers offline playback and decrypting then jacking the music is easy. Couple ways to do it.

I could jack all the high-quality movies I want then upload them. Probably the real reason... or money.

 

Even though recording is possible.

Yeah well it's already easy without Netflix.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P

Maybe if they would stop moving EVERYTHING I WANT TO WATCH, to DVD, this wouldn't be a problem.

 

Or, maybe if the ISP's would stop being ASSHOLES, and allow netflix to install those boxes in their hubs, it also wouldn't be a fucking problem.

They just don't want you to store something removed from their library and make you delete a file stored. Either you would still need online access to validate the content license status or their library would shrink to nothing.

I live in a area with such bad internet speeds I have to pirate films most cases becuase its easier to download then to stream of places like netflix.
I normally just pirate a film over night and it takes a couple hours to do, being forced to only be able to stream means I can never use netlifx because I cant stream the film.
