I've done no fact checking but I thought you could sign up without a credit card. The big deal was that if you wanted to remove your profile, you had to use your credit card.

Looks like you are correct. I just tried signing up with a fake name and email. No verification needed, not even a credit card.

So yeah... Their database is probably full of fake accounts.

 

All of a sudden this became a lot less popcorn worthy.

On top of that AM is infamous for dating mining off social media accounts to create fake profiles of both genders.  So, that makes this even less popcorn worthy.  xD

Imo the hackers are just as disgusting as the people that they're trying to expose. I don't agree with cheating, but sometimes you just don't love a person anymore, I think you should probably have a discussion with your partner about it, but it doesn't mean that all Ashley Madison members are awful people; just playing a little devil's advocate.

Ashley Madison = 30% bots, 50% fake accounts, 10% trolls and curious folks, and then you have 10% who actually went there to cheat with 7% of those being men and 3% being actual women.  So, it's funny they're releasing pointless data mostly.

It was to point out that you're feeling bad about 10 percent of the entire database of users.  Not saying you're wrong, but I agree with you and Linus.  Regardless of how wrong it is to cheat in the eye of the beholder, it doesn't justify invading the privacy of another.

If you don't know What I'm talking about it was on the WAN show for the first Ashley Madison story, they discussed pranking Linus's wife by signing him up (she does the books so the credit card receipt would go to her.... Linus concluded that it was a "definite maybe" though it was probably more towards 'no it's a bad idea'

They decided with their free-time, will, and opportunity to sign up for an affair site to cheat on the person they had the idiocy to marry.  They deserve it.  Trusting a third party like this with their private information to help them meet with someone wanting to help with an affair - they deserve it.

It's going to be difficult to find out if politicians used it, you just need an email to sign up, no confirmation through that email either - that's why people like barack obama are 'signed up' with it.

I don't understand why people are being judgmental of the way others are choosing to lives their life. These so called cheating individuals have no impact on my life and I have no right to judge them. I don't know their situation.  I know enough about life to know, no one is perfect. 

Test ideas by experiment and observation; build on those ideas that pass the test, reject the ones that fail; follow the evidence wherever it leads and question everything.
