I forgot how fast the internet moves when it wants to.

 

When there is other people's pain, misery, and humiliation to take pleasure in, the internet devotes itself to ensuring the most pain happens so as to maximize the amount of pleasure we receive.  And if there is some sense of justice to be had, no matter how false it may be, we work even harder and faster.

 

Although I do agree it still amazes me some times just how fast the internet works, and how much info the internet can find on people.

Basically, Ashley Madison offered a $19 full delete option, even though nothing was actually erased from their files. Making money off false promises, they're going to get hit hard with lawsuits.

I have some friends coming over for the weekend.  I met get my buddy Craig to bring one of his Linux setups, and then have him dl it.  I'm replacing my router anyways.

I'm pretty sure that you can find it on torrents. Just download it onto the Linux box and disconnect it from teh intertubes. Happy lulzing (also, save a .txt file with the good bits)

Sort of, from what I have read, the "deletion" was for all profile information.  They are legally obligated to maintain 7 years ( I think) worth of transaction data.  So the people that paid have all their payment info stored, but all their profile info (username/messages/pics) should be gone.  That said, it is "easy" to claim the profile isn't you, much harder to claim the payment info isn't you when it has full name and address.

Yeah I've been getting emails since we covered this on the wan show. Unless there's a credit card it's basically meaningless data because there's no email verification..

Well, there is a row in the DB that says whether a user's email has been verified in the dumps I've seen.

Yep this is true.

That makes things more interesting again, since it is possible to see what emails are actually valid.

It took me 3.5 hours to import just the email dump which has like 4 columns and 37 million rows.

 

One of the other dumps has like 45 columns and is 12.9GB uncompressed on it's own.

 

That'd take almost 3 days to import on a FX8350, 32GB Ram, WD Red Pro server, let alone a rpi.

That'd take almost 3 days to import on a FX8350, 32GB Ram, WD Red Pro server, let alone a rpi.

That's why you don't import the entire database. You search it and only fetch the relevant data.

That should be very fast.

The news organization pored over a massive trove of data the hackers made available earlier this week. By tracing the IP addresses of people who visited the site over more than five years, AP reporters determined the visitors included two assistant U.S. attorneys; an information technology administrator in the Executive Office of the President; a division chief, an investigator, and a trial attorney in the Justice Department; a government hacker at the Homeland Security Department; and another DHS employee who indicated he worked on a US counterterrorism response.

Many federal customers appeared to use non-government email addresses with handles such as "sexlessmarriage," ''soontobesingle" or "latinlovers." Some Justice Department employees appeared to use pre-paid credit cards to help preserve their anonymity but connected to the service from their office computers.

"I was doing some things I shouldn't have been doing," a Justice Department investigator told the AP. Asked about the threat of blackmail, the investigator said if prompted he would reveal his actions to his family and employer to prevent it. "I've worked too hard all my life to be a victim of blackmail. That wouldn't happen," he said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was deeply embarrassed and not authorized by the government to speak to reporters using his name.

The AP's analysis also found hundreds of transactions associated with Department of Defense networks, either at the Pentagon or from armed services connections elsewhere.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter confirmed the Pentagon was looking into the list of people who used military email addresses. Adultery can be a criminal offense under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

"I'm aware it," Carter said. "Of course it's an issue because conduct is very important. And we expect good conduct on the part of our people... The services are looking into it and as well they should be. Absolutely."

It's confirmed that many people in the government have been using the website. More popcorn for me.
