Aren't like 90 percent of these accounts fake?  Apparently you don't even need to verify through email that it is yours, so that explains the massive amount of emails belonging to officials and others.  But, don't you need a credit card or something to make one of those accounts?  O.o

According to the article on Wired, you're correct.

There is no email verification, but you do need a credit card. So you could just sign up and enter any email you want, but you need a valid credit card.

Not sure if it compares/validates the name on the credit card vs the name they signed up with but if it doesn't then all of this is basically useless data that might be completely fake.

 

Someone signed up with bobama@whitehouse.gov as well. I am calling bullshit on that.

I've done no fact checking but I thought you could sign up without a credit card. The big deal was that if you wanted to remove your profile, you had to use your credit card.

Edit: The hackers did give them the option of shutting down the website, so who's to really blame? And if your security can be hacked, you shouldn't have the right to store credit and personal information, imho.
