Linksys launched "premium antennas" that increase horizontal range

ahhming

372.jpg

The antennas, sold in two- and four-packs for $60 and $100 (models WRT002ANT and WRT004ANT respectively).

Linksys says the dual-band antennas will deliver gain of 4dBi in the 2.4GHz frequency band and 7dBi in the 5GHz band, compared to the 2.5dBi and 3.5dBi gain respectively that the average stock antenna provides. The omnidirectional antennas use standard RP-SMA connectors, so you should be able to mount them to just about any router with upgradeable antennas.

Seems like a gimmick, but I think I'll order me some to test it out.

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Nice try but there's no SLI connector on that. It could've eliminated the unappealing cables.

@Texhnlyze @Syntaxvgm

Get on mah level

That's a picture of my family and I on the front lawn of our property.

Forgot to actually add my thoughts. I imagine these are snake-oil. I'll hold out on my final views until I see the numbers.

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

@LinusTech should test this so we know if it's true.

Also a heads up as to why the gain is lower on the 2.4ghz. That's because their 5ghz antennas. They can work with 2.4 but the gain will be roughly half. The same can not even said he other way around. Putting 2.4ghz antennas on a 5ghz radio wouldn't net you very much range and probably a decrease off stock. The slightly decreased gain on 2.4 vs 5 when using a 5ghz antenna is not a huge thing either because 2.4ghz natively has more wall penetration.

The allowed path loss of the system is ~60 - 100 dB. Adding 3.5 dB (max. @5 GHz) is not a lot. One wall costs you 10 - 20 dB.

Only if you are on the edge and the higher SNR allows to use a better coding (QAM-16 inseted of QAM-32) for example you can get ~25% more speed (best case).

More likely is 0-10% improvement.
