The bigger number means better performance. Better performance means bigger price. Bigger price means more light wallet. More light wallet means tough times. Tough times doesent matter because you can play games on ULTRA so who cares right?

Assuming you're looking to run heavy AAA titles like GTA V, Far Cry 4, Dying Light, Dragon Age Inquisition, Witcher 3:

 

960 = ok 1080p card

970 = great 1080p card, ok 1440p card

980 = good 1440p card

980 Ti = great 1440p card, ok 4k card

 

For lighter stuff like Battlefield or COD Advanced Warfare it's probably more like:

 

960 = great 1080p card

970 = great 1440p card

980 = great 1440p card

980 Ti = great 4k card
