SENTRY: Console-sized gaming PC case project

It's been a week and it isn't up on YouTube yet. Hopefully it isn't a vessel only video

I think that they'll just throw the video either today or tomorrow depending on when they'll have the space with no fresh video from PAX incoming straight away.

As for questions about when we launch I'll just repost myself from [H] to give you info on what's going on:

Please dont get all too optimistic, ive been in this place for a good year now I guess. This already oughta be "before christmas" "eastern holidays" "summer", so cool your engines my man.

Yeah, sorry about that, it's just that so far when we've planned for something and tried to estimate always something new was coming out.

Also first year of the project was overoptimistic thanks to our initial metal subcontractor reassuring us about their awesome bending precision, they eventually couldn't really achieve, so we've literally spent over a year getting know-how about how to handle not so good bending precision.

It was the same with even packaging and shipping those units to Linus having problems with customs papers etc and it set us back with it more than a month then we thought we'll be with this review.

I think "before this Christmas" should be a really pessimistic but safe estimate :)

Hopefully we'll get there sooner, but be the judge for yourself with how it looked so far...

so Saper,

Linus has delivered, he maybe even noticed you beforehand ? Where are we at ?

Linus will deliver on Sunday on youtube and that'll let us know where we stand with people interested in the case based on subscriptions and it will let us see what we're standing on and prepare the sales.

That's the crucial piece of information we need to talk with the metal shop about some proper contract containing quality restrictions we have to safely enforce the quality we want. We also need those numbers so they will treat us more seriously, and It might help us push the project inside our company to speed things up a bit.

I'll quote myself from the LTT forums since it looks like it'll explain also where are we with the payment handling:

We also might lean towards using crowdfunding site as both payment system and additional promotion since there's quite a lot of reasons in payment processor policies for us not to go with our own storefront for payment processor and we're investigating that now.

If we were to go with crowdfunding we'd make sure either to set up really small goal for kickstarter (50 or 100 units which should be just fine) or just go with flexible funding on indiegogo to ensure you'll get what you pay for AND we do not intend to play with stuff like additional perks such as cups and t-shirts and such.

Note the fact that if we were to crowdfund such project (like initially planned at the start of the project) before overcoming all those obstacles like quite a lot kickstarter startups you'd have more reasons to be angry then just the fact that we were teasing you with the impossible release dates.

You pondered sending it to multiple reviewers last time I heard. Are those Sentry's already out ? or is linus review enough to reassure your concerns ?

We'll be sending additional units to reviewers but we're not going to wait for those reviews like we've waited with Linus they'll just come out while we're gathering sales hopefully. We just don't want to send a review unit to reviewers that are not interested (hyped) and the package would wait months for them to pick up and review.

Which crowdfunding site do you two think you'll go with for storefront and payment handling? Seeing as the R&D is already done and the project is significantly closer to launch than the typical crowdfunding project, I guess we would be essentially be funding the first lot of 100ish units?

Indiegogo looks cool to us since they have flexible funding and in-demand option which means we can set a virtual goal of lets say 1000 units buts go with any amount - practically if only one person ordered the case then it's no problem for me to pony up the cash to overpay for that small amount or just to order minimum batch of 25 units. And in-demand gives possibility to handle orders for those late to the party.

Kickstarter's only advantage over indiegogo is that it was first and it's got tons of users with money burning holes in their pockets and for that we could go there and set a goal of 50 or 100 units and go along with this giving us multiple hundreds of % funded when getting significant amounts of orders.

Yeah, the review is on Vessel and can be viewed by anyone now.

The review would have been pushed to Youtube on Sunday if there wasn't the PAX coverage.

I hope it'll be priced fairly, looks great, I think modding it further will be pretty cool

After watching the video, the case look like a smaller version of the node 202 and Silverstone Rvz02. Hopefully the price wouldn't be higher than these. Some Questions I had on the case are whether the LED light on the case can be turn off completely, can fan be mounted on the side of the vented case to help with the air flow or it would require a Laptop Fan cooler and will there be other color other than black and white.

This case is custom made without plastic panels - it cannot compete at price point with node 202 which is really cheap.

If the first run goes well, only then we can start thinking about making it mass produced which means investing in press moulds for metal bending. That would also mean blocking a way to any further changes and upgrades that we might still want to do based on users feedback.

We've talked about it with Linus while he was testing the case.

We've updated the vertical stand mount system and improved the leeway for the hard drive support piece that is attached to the centre wall. Vertical stand will be locked by sliding the locking bolts now instead of sliding the whole stand.

Apart from that we're trying to optimise the screw types/lengths because there's a lot of those now, as you can see in the manual.

Can you guys offer a version with a Window cutout over the GPU? Id love to have one of these cases and plan on cutting the window hole if need be but it would be nice to have it from factory

I don't think we can do that for the safety reasons because there's an inlet partitioning the space above the gpu making it so you won't have such a big surface heat up above on the cover. Without it it would be a safety hazard if you'd let the hot air gather up there.

However if you've got a laser cutting metal shop nearby then making a custom cover for your needs with windows shouldn't be a problem but remember to use it only in vertical position if you were to do that.

We're simply being DDOSed by people wanting to check it out. We just hit 4000 views of our website today...

Hopefully that won't be such a big problem to come back later or I'll have to figure out some deal with hosting provider to give us some additional performance.

This is the LTT community you're talking about. There's a potential for thousands more to be interested in the case...

Well considering the size, and the kind of hardware that would be fine inside it....

Sorry I meant to say a window on the side that the GPU's backplate would show not where the fans are

Yes, and I understood that and as I just said - there's a partition there in the case cover limiting the space above the gpu so the hot air goes outside rather than gathering above gpu in horizontal position.
