Experiences with non-techies

Aw man that sucks the big one. I bought mine in the 8th grade, I'm in 11th now, so about 3-4 years this thing's been with me, no real problems besides the bad temps (kinda forgivable for small case), ext PSU (kinda forgivable for small case) and needing to upgrade to an SSD (need to install win 10) and 970 (haven't done yet)

It was supposedly 1,200 bucks, but with a student discount it was 1 grand exact

I got low 60s CPU and 45 GPU idle, and low 70s CPU and 70-80ish GPU under gaming load

Upgrading to a new case is a bitch, because the IO shield is embedded into the case, and I doubt AW sells those by themselves

Wait, student discount?

They're a thing at certain stores. Quite big too. When I was considering buying a MBP I could get a higher speced machine for less money than the Dell XPS.

Well another story about my incompetent father.

It has been going on for a year now, he doesnt know how to use his damn Galaxy S5. He uses me for ridiculous things like sending emails and deleing apps off homescreen. This has been going on ever since August 2014 when he got the phone (he pays £40 a month for unlimited everything + 2GB tethering on Three).

Well i told him kindly that i will download the manual and paste a link on the homescreen. He laughs it off, tells my mum and i get a shouting. I explain that i have been doing this for a year now. And she is like: "He is your dad!". It amazes me that both tell me to be independent and yet they cant use a damn smarphone and tablet, let alone my custom rig.

Damn Bloody Asians!

Any of you have a solution to this?

He either has really bad memory or just don't want to remember and expects you to help him everytime. When it comes to the technical stuffs, just do it for them even if you have done it a million times. Write the instructions down on a booklet and have him practice on it.

My experience in a nutshell:

My teachers are ALL non-techies, so when there's a problem, I'm always the one fixing it. I go through this at least TWICE a day, and that's NOT hyperbole.

Lol ok ill try to tell him next time. Well ill tell you my experience with Alienware. I had a shitty 14 inch laptop which broke within about 6-8 months, long time ago I cant remember exactly. Then I didn't know that it was broken because everything runs but nothing was working properly, can't use battery, can't use gpu, cant even install geforce driver. I just thought that the batter was dead at the time and didn't think much of it since I wasn't tech savy back then. So one day I finally decided to call Alienware to fix my shitty laptop, the warranty ran out, so I had to pay $400 to get it fixed. I was like f that, I sold the laptop cheap and learn to build a pc from my brother. How much did you pay for ur pc?

Should have contacted them right away. Dell sends technicians to your house to fix your computer. Typically next day. All Alienware computers give a one year warranty.

Those friggin' Beats headphones, man.

I know a girl who wanted new headphones and mentioned the Beats ones.

What's funny is that I suggested getting same headphones I have (Audio-Technica M40X), she got the same and there have been zero complaints about bad headphones since.

My Great Grandmother (nearing 95 years old) asked me for help with her "iPad" that she recently bought. I went over and took a look at it only to realize that it wasn't an iPad, but some crappy ripoff product. I asked where she got it and she said that she went to the mall near us with her daughter (my Grandma). I proceeded to get in the car, drive over there, and find the culprits. There was a group of what looked to be mid to late teens ripping off non-tech savvy people with the guise of apple products. I came at them like a bull in a china shop and started cussing them out. After a few moments, I decided to contact mall security and file a report for the fraudulent activity.

I am always changing tasks priority settings and nerfing stuff that isn't being needed.

But running task manager doesn't speed things up.  Maybe you can use it to speed things up, but with it running things dont randomly speed up.

Shows why AVG are so bad.

(kappa)

Actually, AVG used to be really good.  The best, nowdays free antiviruses suck and the only good one for free is the built in Microsoft one.  I personally pay for my antivirus.  But AVG kind of tricked me, it ended up they weren't paying me well, considering I was a malware security analyst.  And pretty much made sure their products had a really good detection rate, and created exploits attempting to get passed the firewall.

I can assure you, now I'm gone they are probably gonna suck even more.  I was tired of their bullcrap anyways.  I'm now working for an awesome Wells Fargo Network Engineer, who hosts servers out of the kindess of his heart and I'm the co-admin and setup servers and most importantly manage the security of the main server.  I'm allot more happy, and confident.

I've even been offered a university course on Software Engineering today.  At the age of 16, and will get a scholarship into university for Software Engineering, although I might go the computer science route as its a bit more fun.

AVG sucks balls, and there were several teenagers in my group.  Allot of them were in their 40's.  But I think, were they underpaying and exploiting other teens great at IT???

Yeap honestly 99.9% of the security on your computer is what YOU do with it. Then you can be really unlucky but antivirus are not really useful. For a normal user, a free one such as Avira / avast is decent.

True, head is the best.  You've come so far since you first came on our server bro.  Your a motherf***ing badass!

the main vulnerability is browsers.  As they automatically run scripts, if you really want to security use something like noscript and block the hell out of them.  If you dont want to screw up linux stick to the repositories.  If your using Windows, hope you dont download a crappy program.

True, I only use an antivirus for the fact of having one to protect against bulls*** because stuff like unwanted software and even hacking a remote access tools are blacklisted.  It just makes it easier, but honestly.  Antiviruses are 100% not needed anymore.

Hmm, I still don't agree with it.  But whatever works for you is the best.  Never listen to anyone, do whatever the hell you want to do and feel is right.

I just hate avast as a company.  They were very mean to me while I worked for AVG.  They bullied me allot, and their antivirus is coded poorly.  Saying that, now AVG is even worse, I know the main developer for AVG. And nobody even listens to me anymore, its always money and more tuneup tools. So I gave up. They might as well because a crappy tuneup software company.   But instead exploit their reputable name and ruin lives of regular users by using bad registry cleaners.

Beileve it or not, linux is a very vulnerble operating system.  The only thing however is that the updates block allot of exploitation, like remotely attacking a linux box through a vulnerbility or maybe a peice of software exploiting a vulnerbility and trying to drop a payload.   However, generally. The repositories are very good, and Windows is still more insecure than linux.  Simply because of the fact that Windows permission control (UAC) is vulnerble, esspecially on servers which have powershell enabled, and you can actually break through it and get permission to the file system.

Linux is a very good operating system as long as you have no need for anything outside of its barriers.  Either way, Linux is 100% the future.  Its just a matter of time, as Microsoft is slowly failing.
