My 9 year-old harddrive-based iPod is still alive and kickin'.

Mine's a bit of a rare one, at that. 4th Generation with a color display and 20GB.

I want MSN back. It's not like they have to put much effort into developing the client, they could just offer Lync as a free download and set up some public servers.

Curse all of you that abandoned it for Facebook

The iPod classic shouldn't have died. They should put a 120 GB SSD in the iPod touch... and the iPhone... and actually there's no reason that any mobile device should not have 120GB internal SSD storage as a minimum, regardless of whether it can also use external SDs.

SSDs are 2.5" for a reason. it would make your phone considerably larger, and would not yield visible performance gains.

ohh MSN... I think for our generation it was our "facebook"... good old times.

But honestly I would not go back, there are more solutions that are more... adult

SSDs are 2.5" because that's been a standard size for mechanical drives in laptops for ages. That is literally the only reason.

what about the reason that each chip is larger than a CPU+GPU on a mobile?

SSDs still have a way to go get smaller, and at mobile use, the storage chips are fine, you are not bottlenecked by read write speed

The PSP was also discontinued. It came and went with nobody noticing.

If it counts for anything, Silk Road was also shut down.

I still own a Gen 1 PSP. Maybe it'll be worth something to someone in 50 years.

Because read-write speeds are so vital for music playback. How fast do you think the iPod Classic's mechanical hard drive was, I wonder?

no idea, but to be honest, I have no problem playing  back MP3 from mobile device since Sony Ericcson W300i

Regarding FLAC and other lossless audio, I have no idea regarding them tbh
