Evolution to be taught in UK primary schools

https://humanism.org.uk/2014/09/01/evolution-now-part-english-primary-national-curriculum/

Apparently evolution will now be taught to Year 6s as opposed to waiting for Year 10 to start teaching evolution, creationism can now no longer be taught as a scientific theory in any public school around the country.

While I do think this is a great thing I was surprised it hadn't happened sooner.

Creationism has no place in a science class or any class for that matter outside those revolving around religion.

Cool story, how bout you refrain from (even if unintentional) trying to start a science vs religion war.

I wish it was here like that too. Religion is a total lie, and evolution should be accepted by everyone. Shame here religion is pushing away the evolution classes.

Not trying to start a war, I simply saw a news article, saw no one had posted it here, thought some people would like to know.

If people start a war it's their own fault for having no self control

as long as they point out the fact that it is a theorem on the development of advanced life then +1.

We cannot re-create the evolutionary process so we have no definitive proof of the exact measure of development. Get mad.

As far as im aware in Scotland I was never taught Creationism outside of religous classes, Although our eductaion systems are independant from one another so maybe that's why you guys have been taught it in science classes.

that's an interesting username you've got there.

What do you mean "as long as they point out the fact that it is a theorem on the development of advanced life then +1." ?

The way that you worded that makes it sound like you are saying: "As long as they teach evolution, teaching evolution is fine."  Which is a redundancy.

I think certain schools do it differently, I remember at my primary school there was a certain amount of indoctrination going on, but that failed because everyone thought that the creationist story made no sense.

Jeez.

In the old system the tended to vaguely hint at it when doing biology, they had to wait till secondary schools to teach evolution.

Although that has changed now and that change is for the better.

Inb4 angry religious people.

But seriously, evolution should be taught. If religious people don't like it, they have it deal with it. I don't give a shit about your bloody prayers in my assembly, but I don't fucking complain.

Not true, we can influence how biological matterevolves based on changing their environment.

Even if they don't, it's better than teaching creationism, at least science is willing to correct itself, heck, they aim to prove themselves wrong so that progress can be made.

:o fina f*cking lee, ples australia, someone in my science class yesterday thought cave men where a myth

Australia already teaches evolution.  Religious education is not compulsory and the teacher must remain in the room to prevent the RE teacher from saying anything inappropriate.  Teachers are not allowed to express religious or political opinions of their own (unless it is a private school that specifically educates that) and must present both side of any discussion equally.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Oooh,  science yes, scientists no, scientists can be just as corrupt and intentional wrong in order to get their name in the paper or the next round of grants as anyone else.

It's not taught as evolution, but the process is taught in science as genetics and biology.   At least it was when I wen through in the 80's.  It's taught in my sons school and he attends a catholic college.

Having gone to a catholic primary and secondary school (and turning out an atheist), I can tell you that in the UK, evolution is given a fair shake at teaching.

In science, we learn about evolution as a scientific fact. In RE, that's where we learn about Creationism, as it should be.

Also, I'll always remember in Year 11 when we were doing sex ed (because we'd turned 16 and could legally have sex) and the teacher came in and said "Now because this is a catholic school I can't show you or endorse the use of condoms, but come on, don't be stupid".

It does humour me to know that in every other school I know of they've had a "dildo lesson" where-by they've used a dildo to show how to apply a condom and in my school we never had that.

When this is standard practice around the world, we might just finally have some peace.
