VAIO launches its first laptops without Sony and they're very, very familiar

VAIO's back. It's no longer Sony's PC business, but it's own independent beast. Teasing its relaunch online, the company says that it's free and that things are going to change. The Japanese blurb says that's partly due to the fact that it's now a "small" PC maker -- and it's the same message the new company plans to deliver at its launch event today in Tokyo.. Unfortunately, its debut range are a bit too familiar, being almost identical to the Pro and Fit models its parent company launched last year.

 

To the new CEO's credit, Takayuki Sekitori admitted that the two initial models were very well received -- and that was part of the point. 

 

well at least they have brand recondition, wonder how long people are going to call them Sony VAIO's

 

will update as more comes out

 

on sale today.... well,  in Japan 

 

from the maze of characters the PRO has a choice of 

  • i7-4510U, i5-4210U, and i3-4030U
  • Intel HD 4400 graphics
  • 4GB or 8GB RAM 
  • 1080p 11.6" or 13.3" screen
  • 128, 256, or 512GB SDD SATA III on the 11.6" and PCI x4 on the 13.3"
  • A choice of Windows 8.1 or Windows 7

  • Same CPU & GPU options
  • Same RAM options
  • 15.5" 1080p screen or 15.5" 1366x768 screen
  • 5400rpm 500GB drive
  • Disk drive
  • same OS options

macOS scales. windows doesn't really.

macOS scales. windows doesn't really.

 

Ever tried 8.1? Scales quite well really. Except for some apps..

Looks like viaos are back on my list of laptops to watch. They have always been good to me in the past so I am ok with this

Desktop -  i5 4670k, GTX 770, Maximums VI Hero, 2X Kingston Hyper X 3k in raid zero.

Laptop - Lenovo X230 Intel 535 480GB, 16GB Gskill memory, Classic Keyboard Mod, Triple USB 3.0 Express Card.

Well, VAIO's laptops aren't made for gaming, never have and never will, so idk what you expected.

 

That being said, i'd love to see more laptops with something like a 840m or 850m for a decent price. Here in the UK it's a pain in the ass to find a decent spec on a laptop that isn't from PCSpecialist, then when you do it's pretty much twice the price of the conversion from usd to gbp. Although, since Nvidia has branded the 850m as a GTX, only "gaming laptops" will get it, so we'll be expected to pay £700+ for it if we're lucky (checking amazon, the cheapest laptop is a gigabyte laptop and that's selling for £770, the others are £900+).

yeah those apps are what's important. basic stuff scales, but not all apps.

The FIT had a 2GB 735M option.

The PRO is too thin, it's actually the thinnest 13.3" touch ultrabook.

5800X3D - RTX 4070 - 2K @ 165Hz

Will they even sell these outside of Japan? The site is in Japanese mostly so maybe not.

I bought the Vaio Tap 11 right after they announced they would stop selling in the US. I'm glad the Vaio brand is still kicking in Asia.

I looked at a picture of one but unfortunately the picture's hinge broke.

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Not to mention the typical viewing angle of a panel with that res, it isn't just the resolution that sucks, the whole panel is almost always horrible to use.
