Is my CPU bottle-necking PLZ HALP! :)

I have upgraded my GPU recently from a Nvidia GT 630 to am AMD R9 290 Gigabyte Windforce. My CPU is a AMD Fx-8320, and i really feel as if my 290 is being severely bottlenecked! I tested a couple of game on ultra (BF4, Bf3, M:LL) and i have drawn to this conclusion because all of the reviews of the card say you get between 55-130 on ULTRA on a any map except Shanghai (that map is OP). My rig runs it on ultra on most maps between 50-100 FPS ultra. However shanghai I play/record on with high settings and get between 25-70. Could someone explain whats going on????

Thanks for your time :)

PC:

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5g Ghz

GPU: Gigabyte Windforce R9 290 OC

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 AM3+ socket

RAM: 16 GB of standard GSkill RAM standard clock

PSU: Topower 700W bronze rating

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green

CASE: Thermaltake V3 Black

Its a respectable PC but if it is BNing then I'll upgrade to either a i7 4770k

or a i5 4670k. I do editing and multimedia stuff, thats why i am leaning towards the i7

Check CPU usage in-game

and gpu load also! so you see if big load on cpu and low load on gpu, then cpu cant keep up and gpu has nothing to do :D

Yes your CPU will most likely be the bottleneck in your system. Just look at the gaming performance delta in games with regards to your CPU - check out reviews of your CPU. When you look at reviews for GPUs they often try to remove any bottlenecking and run a bench with a high-end CPU, usually overclocked. When you look at performance reviews on your CPU there is a noticeable gap between it and other CPUs - specifically Intel. Your CPU does however offer excellent price vs. performance but just not enough performance for the higher end games as to not be a bottleneck.

Nah, your performance seems to be approximately correct.. There's always going to be some discrepancy between what numbers the reviews say and what you actually get in the real world, due to things like other system specs, background software, specific game settings, clockspeeds, etc, etc..

Like Sonefiler said, monitor your CPU and GPU usage while gaming and tell us what you see. (and give us some more accurate numbers, 50-100 is a biiiigggg spread).

Also, maybe OC the CPU and see if that improves performance? OC'ing is a much cheaper option than spending ~$450-500 on a new i7/Z97 setup.

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

It might be, but it shouldn't really be that bad.

OC the CPU to about 4.5Ghz. Also try to either reduce ram CL or increase speeds(depends on ram)

Right now there seems to be a problem with BF4 with massive frame drops. It does not matter what GPU or CPU you are using. Xfactor had a video posted were his rig dropped to 17ish FPS. LevelCap and Matimio reported it in the same round as well.

Also with BF3 and BF4 you should be using Mantle if you arent already and using atleast 14.4 or 14.6 if you play watch dogs.

One last thing.... Is my mobo OCable?

I am using a recording software that is DX only. I've tried mantle but its a hassle if i want to record but cant BC i have to restart my game. Also, is my Mobo OC capable - GA-970A-UD3?

You can use some tricks to record with Mantle.

Yes your board is capable of OCing. Just dont push it too far as that board will have the same VRM heat issues the 990FX UD3 Rev 1.0-3.0 had. The heatsink is alittle on the small side.

Thanks ill record a 5 min video and put it unlisted on YT and link it on this thread later today. It will be oc'd to 4.3 or more depending on my success.

50-100 fps in BF4 is kinda awful. Get a tool like playclaw 5 to monitor your gpu loads ingame or msi afterburner. BF3 is cpu bound and a 4670k will bottleneck so much lower, end of it.

Mantle on?

Something is wrong. I got 40 FPS on a OCed 7770 on low at 5760x1080 with Mantle.

most likely his mobo is a piece of junk... its gigabyte... with powerphase doublers you know.

you could also try diffrent gpu drivers.

As far as i can see on your stuttering, your system is not running stable.

battlefield is cpu heavy. you need a 6 core if you want ~100 fps minimum. anyone who says otherwise please read the chipreview write up on frostbite 2's limit of cores for bf3. I cant link it because im at work an it is blocked.

Upgrade to a 4670k and you'd get a 99% loadconsistently on your gpu. You aren't the only one experiencing cpu bottlenecks with 8350's in BF4.
